Position: Police Officer Certified/ Certifiable (Lateral)

Job Overview

The Police Officer Certified/Certifiable position protects and serves the citizens and communities of the City of Lansing. Under general supervision, the officer carries out a wide variety of tasks including law enforcement, traffic control, issuing citations, criminal investigations, making arrests, supporting special crime prevention programs, and performing technical and administrative duties.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce state and local traffic regulations and control traffic flow.
  • Issue citations, conduct investigations, and make arrests as required.
  • Assist in and conduct various criminal investigations.
  • Provide support to special crime prevention and law‑enforcement programs.
  • Perform support and administrative tasks in aid of law‑enforcement services.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Associate Degree preferred or completion of 24 semester (or equivalent) college credits.
  • Two years of prior experience as a certified police officer or
  • Current or prior military commitment in good standing.
  • Completion of military commitment in good standing; military course credits may count for equivalency.
  • For candidates with prior law‑enforcement experience and a lapse in certification, proof of re‑certification must be provided before final job offer.
  • Out‑of‑state certified applicants must pass the MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE) program or testing before final offer.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Available for 10‑hour shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Good moral character demonstrated through a favorable, comprehensive background investigation.
  • Honorably discharged USA Armed Forces veteran (DD‑214 required).
  • U.S. citizen at time of job offer.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
  • No pending or past felony convictions.
  • Passes background investigation and city medical standards.

Salary & Compensation

  • Current salary: $56,629.41 – $80,933.42 (maximum reachable in five years).
  • Lateral starting salary up to Step 4 based on prior police, military, or specialized training:
  • Step 2: $60,912.94
  • Step 3: $65,640.36
  • Step 4: $70,336.24
  • Vest‑bonus: $1,000 annually.
  • Longevity payments:
  • 5–10 years: $400
  • 10–15 years: $800
  • 15–20 years: $1,200
  • 20+ years: $1,600
  • Clothing allowance: 2 % or 4 % pay increase based on assignments.
  • Shift differential for noon or night shifts.
  • Unlimited overtime opportunities (district, CATA, events, etc.).

Benefits Summary

  • Defined benefit pension with eligibility at 25 years of service and age 50.
  • Reciprocal retirement credit for prior service in eligible reciprocal systems.
