Job Title: Journeyman / Foreman Sheet Metal Worker
Job Description
This role is for an experienced Journeyman or Foreman Sheet Metal Worker specializing in commercial and industrial construction. You will install and fabricate HVAC-related sheet metal components, lead or support a small crew, and ensure high-quality work from project start to finish. The position requires a motivated, self-starting professional who takes pride in craftsmanship, follows direction on site, and is willing to perform all tasks needed to complete the job properly.
Responsibilities
- Install sheet metal assemblies such as flashing, pipes, tubes, heating and air conditioning casings, furnace casings, and related components within supportive frameworks.
- Install hanging straps, round and rectangular ducting, uni-strut hangers, air handlers, and ductless split systems, including work performed on ladders and scissor lifts as needed.
- Select appropriate gauges and types of sheet metal and non-metallic materials according to product specifications and project requirements.
- Measure, cut, and punch holes in metal for screws, bolts, and rivets, ensuring accuracy and adherence to blueprints and construction drawings.
- Fabricate, modify, or alter sheet metal parts at construction sites using shears, hammers, punches, drills, and other hand and power tools.
- Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, and smooth surfaces, seams, and joints of assembled parts to meet quality standards and ensure proper fit and finish.
- Read and interpret blueprints and mechanical construction drawings to plan ductwork layouts and installations for commercial HVAC systems.
- Install rectangle, square, round, spiral, rigid, and flex ductwork for commercial and industrial HVAC applications.
- Handle sheet metal tools and equipment safely and efficiently, maintaining tools in good working condition.
- Work both independently and as part of a team to complete interior commercial projects from start to finish under tight deadlines.
- Assist with general site tasks including trash removal, scrap and debris cleanup, relocating materials, and any other duties requested by the on-site foreman to ensure the job is completed correctly.
- Provide leadership on site, including the ability to run a job and oversee a team of approximately two workers when acting in a foreman capacity.
- Maintain good physical condition to perform work in awkward spaces, at heights, and in various commercial property environments.
- Follow all applicable safety guidelines and practices while working on active construction sites.
Essential Skills
- At least 5 years of Journeyman or Foreman-level sheet metal installation experience in commercial and industrial construction.
- Proven sheet metal installation experience, including HVAC installation and mechanical construction work.
- Hands-on experience installing rectangle, square, round, spiral, rigid, and flex ductwork.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings for ductwork and HVAC systems.
- Proficiency with sheet metal hand tools, cordless power drills, and other common sheet metal tools and equipment.
- Ability to perform precise cutting, punching, drilling, trimming, and finishing of sheet metal components.
- Capability to work in physically demanding and awkward spaces with good strength and endurance.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team to complete interior commercial projects from start to finish.
- Proven track record of delivering high-quality work under tight deadlines.
- Reliable transportation to and from commercial job sites.
- Ownership of required sheet metal tools for daily work.
- Valid driver’s license.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience leading a small crew and running jobs as a foreman, including overseeing a team of approximately two workers.
- Background in commercial construction and industrial construction environments.
- HVAC installation experience, including ductwork and mechanical construction.
- Diploma from a trade school or successful completion of a sheet metal or HVAC apprenticeship is a plus.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 safety certification is a plus.
- Strong attitude, motivation, and self-starting work ethic.
- Ability to follow foreman instructions and adapt to changing job site needs.
- Attention to detail in finishing surfaces, seams, and joints to meet quality standards.
