Description

The Courthouse Police Service Officer is a non‑commissioned law enforcement position providing safety and security for the 18th Judicial District Courthouses and Sedgwick County properties. The officer will secure and screen visitors, patrol facilities, and coordinate emergency communications, ensuring a safe environment for employees, visitors, and the public. The position may require physically detaining individuals until a commissioned officer arrives.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Access Control and Screening: Greet visitors, direct them through metal detectors, explain procedures for checking personal property, operate metal detectors and x‑ray equipment, hand‑scan or physically check items, and handle medical exceptions.
  • Monitor facility access control, check employee badges, LEO credentials, and Fast Passes; notify a commissioned officer of any criminal activity.
  • Regular Patrols: Conduct thorough interior and exterior patrols to deter illegal activity, escort persons as needed, issue parking citations, and respond to calls for service (fire alarms, medical calls).
  • Document all incidents and actions accurately.
  • Coordinate Communications: Maintain control‑center phones and camera systems, log daily and compound property activities, notify personnel of developing situations, and liaise with 911, fire, EMS, and county facilities for remote access control.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Six months of experience in law enforcement, security services, customer service, or a related field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license without restrictions and current automobile insurance (required for a driving‑level position).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in military, law enforcement, fire, or security-related roles.
  • Training or certificates related to military, law enforcement, fire, or security topics.
