Job Description

Opticians are responsible for selling eyewear and eyewear accessories to patients. They ensure patients are fitted with the right‑size frames that fit their needs and lifestyle and dispense lenses with correct prescription and measurements. Opticians are at the heart of our business. Their technical and customer service skills ensure patient satisfaction and repeat business.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver extraordinary experience to each patient and provide a complete understanding of customized recommendations for products and services.
  • Develop own clientele through outstanding service and referrals.
  • Stay current on company/industry products and procedures, manufacturer rebates, and available lens and frame types.
  • Takes and returns patient calls, updates patients on order status, resolves issues, and escalates when necessary.
  • Retrieve patient charts and electronic health records.
  • Assist patients in selecting frames, lens type, and lens treatments (tints, coatings) based on specific needs and facial measurements.
  • Educate patients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care.
  • Collect eye and face measurements to ensure proper fit.
  • Interpret prescriptions written by optometrist and ophthalmologist.
  • Create work orders for lab technicians specifying lens information.
  • Follow up on all pending orders, verify time guidelines, inform patients of delays, and notify them when orders arrive from lab/manufacturer.
  • Dispense glasses by inspecting the product, checking for proper fit, adjusting if necessary, and asking for feedback.
  • Adjust eyewear to ensure visual acuity, proper fit, and patient comfort using various tools and perform repairs.
  • Proficiently use tools such as pupilometers, PD sticks, lensometers, pliers, wrenches, and frame warmers.
  • Regularly communicate with technicians and store managers, providing additional patient information or order status updates.
  • Inspect the final product to ensure no flaws; clean and polish lenses using cloths and solvents.
  • Clean and organize frame boards, displays, mirrors, workbench, office area, bathroom, and breakroom to maintain cleanliness and visual appeal.
  • Restock retail boards with new merchandise.
  • Understand product issues and analyze problems; thoroughly answer patients’ questions regarding insurance, warranty, products, materials, services, pricing, upgrades, and promotions.
  • Collaborate with technicians, front desk associates, managers, and optometrist.
  • Sell miscellaneous products such as cleaners, contact lens supply, sunglasses, and safety glasses.
  • Perform other duties as needed and as assigned by manager.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of one‑year experience working as an optician (strongly preferred).
  • Experience with HIPAA requirements preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills, pleasant demeanor, and sales experience preferred.
  • Manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination.
  • Dependability and punctuality.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, bend, kneel, and stand up to 8 hours a day.

  • This position requires the ability to communicate and exchange information, utilize equipment necessary to perform the job, and move about the office.
