Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform maintenance and repairs on city buses and transit equipment
- Conduct engine tune-ups and diagnostic testing
- Complete minor repairs and replace mechanical components
- Inspect, disassemble, and reassemble gasoline and alternative-fuel engines
- Service brakes, suspension, steering, and drive systems
- Maintain and repair electrical and HVAC systems
- Respond to road calls for on-site bus repairs
- Document all work performed accurately
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area
- Perform related duties as assigned
This class is an entry level class in a flexibly-staffed series, incumbents are expected to progress with appropriate training and experience after one (1) year of satisfactory performance to flex to a Bus Mechanic II, the journey level of the class series ($6,287-$7,643).
Duties and schedules may vary by assignment, please inquire about specific duties and/or schedules if called upon for an interview. Incumbents may be required to work any shift; nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Newly hired incumbents may be assigned to work the night shift. Night shift premium pay ranges from $1.45 to $2.30 per hour.

The current vacancy exists in the Transportation Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. Should the competitive process be suspended for this recruitment, the eligibility list may be limited to three (3) months.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that are necessary to safely, effectively, and efficiently perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation. This classification’s physical demands involve medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical demands may?be required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking.
The Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
Option 1:
Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED Completion
AND
One (1) year of full-time paid experience performing routine maintenance and repairs on diesel and gasoline powered cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment, and other vehicles including Liquid/Compressed Natural Gas (LNG/CNG), Hydrogen Fuel cell, Battery Electrical vehicles and equipment.
Maintenance and repairs may include, but are not limited to, the following: performing oil changes, tire rotations, and brake pad replacements; repairing and replacing faulty parts such as engines, transmissions, suspension components, and electrical systems; and using diagnostic equipment to identify problems and determine the best repair technique.
Option 2:
Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED Completion
AND
A certification of completion or Associate’s Degree from a recognized vocational, technical, or accredited college or university program in automotive or heavy equipment technology.
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required at time of application and during the entire term of employment in this classification. Candidates considered for hire will be required to provide proof of a valid driver's license and a current copy of their driving record.
Within thirty (30) days of appointment must obtain a valid Commercial Instructional
Permit.
Within twelve (12) months must obtain and maintain a valid a California Commercial
Class B Driver’s License, with required endorsements and without air brake restriction.
Within twelve (12) months of appointment, must possess the following two (2) valid
certifications issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in
the Bus Transit (H) Series:
- Brakes (H4)
- Steering & Suspension (H5)
