Position: AIRPORT FIREFIGHTER RECRUIT II - STATEWIDE
Job Overview
Recruitment Number 26-0183. This recruitment is being conducted to fill vacancies with the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Airports Division. The Physical Ability Tests (PAT) will be administered only on the Island of Oahu. The PAT dates are October or November 2026 and February or March 2027; applicants will be invited to only one of these dates.
Duties Summary
This entry‑level class in the State of Hawaii Airport Firefighter series participates in the airport rescue firefighter training program, acquiring knowledge and skills in aircraft and structural firefighting, rescue work, and emergency medical care. Responsibilities include performing or assisting in various airport firefighting and other specialized or emergency operations, and performing other related tasks as directed.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
- Citizenship: U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
- Basic education:
High school diploma or GED certificate; one year of work experience may substitute for a high school diploma.
- License and Certification:
Valid driver’s license in the State of Hawaii; valid CPR and AED certificate;
Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Hazardous Materials Operations certifications issued by IFSAC or Pro Board;
National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians or equivalent certification with required documentation.
- Physical ability and health standards suitable for the position.
License and Certification Requirements
- Valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii.
- CPR and AED certificate with issue and expiration dates.
- Firefighter I Certification – Issued by IFSAC or Pro Board.
- Firefighter II Certification – Issued by IFSAC or Pro Board.
- Hazardous Materials Awareness Certification – Issued by IFSAC or Pro Board.
- Hazardous Materials Operations Certification – Issued by IFSAC or Pro Board.
- NREMT or equivalent emergency medical technician certificate with registry, expiration date, and provider level.
Physical Ability Test (PAT)
- Schedule:
Two PAT dates – October/November 2026 and February/March 2027; only one is offered to each applicant.
- Location:
Oahu only; travel and lodging costs are the applicant’s responsibility.
- Format:
Two-day test with Swim/Tread Water and Physical Endurance events.
Examination and Selection Process
- Phase 1:
Minimum Qualification Requirements – Pass/Fail.
- Phase 2:
Physical Ability Test – Pass/Fail.
- Phase 3:
Interview and Selection conducted by the Airports Division.
- Successful completion of all phases and PAT results are considered during selection.
Responsibilities
Applicants are responsible for all costs associated with the examination process, including pre‑employment physical examinations, travel to Oahu, and training class expenses. Selected candidates must complete a one‑year probationary period to gain permanent civil service status.
