School Based Health Center Sites
WORK HOURS: On Call, Up to 30 hours per week, 75% FTE
STATUS: Union, Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The SBHC Department partners with three school districts to provide comprehensive health services at six SBHCs. The SBHCs reduce health inequities by focusing on prevention and youth empowerment. The Medical Assistant I (MAI) is a key member of the medical care team who proactively collaborates with providers to provide high quality primary care to a panel of patients. The MAI assists in managing patient flow and performs care coordination for patients in their pod, under the guidance of a registered nurse. The MAI will also perform administrative duties and represent the medical department at meetings.
As this is an On Call position, this role will be traveling site to site as coverage is needed.
The Native American Health Center is an accredited institution and adheres to the standards of excellence set forth by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA).
Duties & Responsibilities
Pod Primary MA Responsibilities
- Greet patients and initiates medical visit in a welcoming and supportive fashion appropriate to patients need and development.
- Review patient chart and prepare vaccine report for daily morning huddles.
- Work in conjunction with others in pod to ensure patients are roomed and discharged in an efficient manner.
- Appropriately prepare exam room for patient visits.
- Conduct an initial interview; record results into the patients’ electronic health record (EHR) in an accurate and timely manner.
- Obtain consistent and accurate vitals; pulse, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height of patients. Record results into the patients’ electronic health record.
- Perform developmentally appropriate blood tests, EKG's, visual acuity, urine and hearing tests
- Collect member specimens for testing.
- Update patient information as needed.
- Provide patient care by following approved standing-orders based on the patient history and presenting symptoms.
- Administer any ordered injections and or medications to pediatric and adult patients; Document all results, interventions, treatments and medications fully and appropriately into patient’s chart.
- Update new and existing patient immunization records in all appropriate databases before visit completion.
- Assist providers with procedures, using appropriate clean/sterile techniques as directed.
- Demonstrate responsibility for proper and accurate functioning of all medical equipment. Proactively alerts supervisor if repair, service, replacement is needed
- Assist in providing health education, as appropriate and as directed.
Pod Care And Case Coordination Responsibilities
- In preparation for scheduled patients, anticipate and procure relevant documents and data for the provider (i.e., consultation reports from specialists.)
- Review providers’ schedule throughout the day and work proactively to keep care team on track.
- Assist provider with follow–up, as directed (i.e., outreach to patients, call labs for results, etc.)
- Support with panel management and group visits as needed.
- Assist in coordination of subspecialty referrals, in collaboration with the Referral Coordinator.
- Support with patient outreach, follow-up and appointment scheduling when needed and as requested.
- Support program staff in managing forms, for pod providers’ signature/attention.
General Duties And Responsibilities
- Close lab and assess for supply needs according to departmental protocol daily.
- Provide MA coverage across SBHC sites when needed and as requested.
- Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned.
- Patient Care: Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe patient practices.
- Employee Safety: Safely perform all duties; follow required protective protocols to ensure personal safety as well the safety of others.
6 Support with transportation of clinical inventory supplies when needed and as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Administrative Duties And Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for executing lead MA duties at designated sites: VFC tracking and documentation, supply management, equipment QA, patient education documents, lab organization and cleanliness.
