Galvan Industries is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Fitter to join our steel fabrication team. This position plays a critical role in preparing and assembling structural steel components for welding and final fabrication.

The ideal candidate understands fabrication workflow, can read prints accurately, maintains high quality standards, and takes pride in building work correctly the first time.

This is a hands‑on role in a fast‑paced heavy industrial environment where safety, accuracy, and productivity matter.

Position Summary

The Fitter is responsible for laying out, fitting, aligning, and preparing structural steel components according to fabrication drawings and specifications. This role works closely with welders, operators, and shop leadership to ensure jobs move efficiently through production while maintaining quality and dimensional accuracy.

Fitters are expected to work independently, maintain organized work areas, and contribute to a disciplined, production‑focused shop environment.

Key Responsibilities

Fabrication & Fit‑Up

Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and shop prints

Lay out, measure, and fit structural steel components according to specifications

Assemble and tack weld parts for final welding operations

Verify dimensions, squareness, alignment, and tolerances before weld‑out

Use measuring tools, levels, squares, and layout equipment accurately

Production Support

Maintain workflow to support production schedules and minimize delays

Coordinate with welders and shop personnel to ensure efficient job flow

Identify fit‑up issues, material discrepancies, or drawing concerns before production delays occur

Assist with material handling, staging, and organization of work areas

Quality & Accuracy

Ensure all assemblies meet print specifications and company quality standards

Perform visual inspections of fit‑up and material condition prior to welding

Maintain attention to detail to reduce rework and fabrication errors

Follow approved fabrication procedures and shop standards

Safety & Shop Discipline

Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and housekeeping expectations

Operate safely around overhead cranes, forklifts, welding operations, and fabrication equipment

Maintain a clean and organized work area

Report unsafe conditions or equipment concerns immediately

Requirements

Required Qualifications

3+ years of structural steel fitting or fabrication experience

Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and weld symbols

Experience using tape measures, squares, levels, and layout tools accurately

Strong understanding of fit‑up tolerances and dimensional accuracy

Ability to safely use grinders, torches, and basic fabrication equipment

Strong work ethic and ability to work in a production‑driven environment

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a structural steel or heavy industrial fabrication shop

Tack welding experience (MIG/FCAW preferred)

Overhead crane and forklift experience

Familiarity with AWS fabrication standards

Experience working in an AISC‑certified environment

Summary

This role works in a heavy industrial fabrication shop with exposure to:

Moving machinery

Heat, sparks, fumes, and airborne particles

Outdoor and non‑climate‑controlled conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing, bending, and working around large steel assemblies.
