Accounting + Business Manager

Full Time • Salaried • EOE

Typical Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4pm

The Accounting + Business Manager ensures that Habitat’s accounting, mortgage activity, and financial reporting are sound, stable, and built to last. In this role, you lead the intersection of nonprofit accounting, construction job-costing, and mortgage loan servicing, stewarding the financial backbone that makes our unique affordable homeownership model possible. By safeguarding our financial integrity, you help ensure that families can build stability, invest in their futures, and create lasting opportunities for their children and our communities.

This position reports to: the Chief Executive Officer and collaborates with departments across the organization. The Accounting + Business Manager participates in financial reporting to the Board of Directors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership + Partnership

  • Collaborate with the CEO and leadership team to align financial strategies across the organization
  • Provide clear, actionable financial information to the CEO and leadership team to guide strategic decision-making
  • Prepare the financial reporting for the Board of Directors and participate in board-level financial reviews
  • Serve as the primary liaison for Habitat’s financial relationships, including banking, insurance, and risk management partners, ensuring these relationships support organizational stability and long-term sustainability.

Financial Operations + Mortgage Stewardship

  • Oversee the financial complexities of Habitat’s affordable homeownership model, including construction accounting, job-costing, and mortgage-related financial activity
  • Direct all daily accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance
  • Manage organizational cash flow, income, and expenses to ensure financial stability and sustainability
  • Supervise mortgage loan servicing oversight to ensure the integrity of the 0% interest mortgage program
  • Oversee payroll processing and the financial administration of employee benefits and retirement plans, working in partnership with the Human Resources Coordinator and external vendors
  • Partner with department leaders to develop and monitor departmental, organizational, and affiliate-level budgets, including balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow planning

Compliance, Audit + Grant Management

  • Maintain rigorous internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable financial standards
  • Lead the annual independent audit and tax filing (Form 990) processes
  • Support external monitoring and audits related to grants or public funding
  • Ensure adherence to all internal financial policies and procedures

Team Leadership + Development

  • Directly supervise three key accounting related positions within the organization who work in donation receivables, accounts receivable, accounts payable, mortgage management, and human resources.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and continuous improvement
  • Foster a culture of integrity, collaboration, and professionalism within the finance and mortgage teams
  • Adapt leadership and supervision styles to individual roles and strengths to support growth and performance

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Proven experience in transactional and supervisory accounting roles
  • Experience with construction, job-cost, inventory, mortgage, or program-based accounting
  • Prior experience coordinating or supporting financial audits
  • Proficiency with automated accounting systems and Microsoft Office 365
  • Experience with Sage 50 nonprofit accounting software preferred
  • Experience with nonprofit and grant accounting and compliance preferred
  • Have and maintain a clear criminal record
