Here at Scout Motors, we're carrying forward the heritage of one of the most iconic American vehicles in history. A vehicle dating back to 1960. One that forged the path for future generations of rugged SUVs and trucks and will do so once again.
But Scout is more than just a brand, it’s a legacy steeped in a culture of exploration, caretaking, and hard work.
The Scout brand is all about respect. Respect for the past and the future by taking an iconic American brand that hasn’t been around for a while, electrifying it, digitizing it, and loading it with American innovation. Respect for communities by creating a company that stands for its people and its customers. Respect for both work and play, with vehicles that are equally at home at a camp site, a job site, or on a Tuesday commute. And respect for our customers by developing two powertrains that meet their requirements — an all-electric powertrain as well as the Harvester™ range extender powertrain which includes a built-in gas-powered generator with an estimated 500 miles of combined range.
At Scout Motors, we empower our talented, inclusive, and entrepreneurial teams to innovate. What makes a Scout employee? Someone who is a visionary and a leader, who seeks new paths and shares lessons learned. A knowledgeable doer who collaborates across the company to build better. A go-getter with unrivaled passion.

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Sales Engineering team, you will be a core contributor to the systems that power our end-to-end customer vehicle purchase journey. From trade-in and vehicle configuration through finance, leasing, and delivery — you will build reliable, well-crafted backend services and work hands-on with the third-party integrations that bring those capabilities to life.
You will collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and external partners to ship features that directly impact how customers experience buying a vehicle. You'll take ownership of meaningful pieces of the stack, contribute to technical decisions within your team, and grow your scope over time.
This role is ideal for an engineer who writes thoughtful, production-quality code, takes pride in building things that work reliably, and wants to deepen their experience in a complex, high-stakes transactional domain.
What you’ll do
Become part of an iconic brand that is set to revolutionize the electric pick-up truck rugged SUV marketplace by achieving the following:
Build and maintain backend services across the customer purchase journey — writing clean, well-tested, production-quality code that your teammates can rely on and build upon.
Design and implement APIs, data models, and service logic that are correct, performant, and easy to evolve as requirements change.
Integrate with third-party providers - valuation services, lender platforms, logistics APIs, and factory systems - building integration layers that are reliable and well-abstracted.
Apply sound engineering patterns to the challenges of distributed systems: error handling, retries, idempotency, and observability - both within our own services and across external dependencies.
Take end-to-end ownership of features: from scoping and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring in production.
Participate actively in code and design reviews: sharing knowledge, catching issues early, and helping maintain a high engineering bar across the team.
Collaborate with product managers, designers, and partner teams to understand requirements and deliver solutions that meet real user needs.
Contribute to improving team practices: documentation, testing standards, on-call processes, and the day-to-day reliability of the systems you own.
Use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to increase your own velocity and share effective practices with teammates.
Location Travel Expectations :
The role will be based out of a Scout Motors location in Fremont, California.
This role requires 1 day per week in the office, with regular in-person meetings and events.
Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.
What you’ll bring
We expect all Scout employees to have integrity, curiosity, resourcefulness, and strive to exhibit a positive attitude, as well as a growth mindset. You’ll be comfortable with change and flexible in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. You’ll take a collaborative approach to achieve ambitious goals. Here's what else you'll bring:
