Preschool Lead Teacher
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Senior Pastor, Director of Youth & Family Ministry, Church Council, Board of Education
PURPOSE: The Preschool Lead Teacher/Extended Care provider is part of the team ministry of Hosanna Lutheran Church and School. The teacher provides academic instruction toward developmental milestone success in the 2-3 year old Preschool program in accordance with the guidelines of the Board of Education of the congregation. The Extended Care duties include supervising children during aftercare hours.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- The teacher shall meet required Arizona Licensing requirements:
- Fingerprint, Criminal History & Central Registry Clearance
- Age: 18 years old or older
- Education & Experience (one of the following):
- High School diploma, GED or 6 months experience; 12 ECE credits & 6 months experience; NAC/CDA/CCP/CPC certifications (no experience necessary);
- Associate degree in ECE/Closely related field (no experience necessary);
- Bachelor’s Degree in ECE/Closely related field (no experience necessary).
- The teacher models the Christian faith, dresses appropriately, and is an effective communicator.
- The teacher is effective at teaching young children, values play and critical learning skills, and has a desire to help children reach appropriate developmental milestones as described in the Ages & Stages section of the Little Palms Parent Handbook, developed by the LCMS Pacific Southwest District School Ministries.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Partner with Church Staff, Lay Leadership, and Membership to contribute to the mission of “Making Disciples” through the ministry of Little Palms Preschool, and youth and family mission activities.
2. Serves as lead teacher in the Preschool classroom for children ages 2-3 years old, to educate in ways that meet academic & developmental milestones, AZ State Standards, and create a foundational love for learning in all students.
3. The teacher supervises the work of the classroom aide, if such a position is filled on staff, delegating duties as needed in support of the teacher’s needs in the operation of the classroom and the execution of lesson plans.
4. The teacher shall always be supervising children under their care: never leave the classroom unattended, always have eyes on all children and know what they are participating in, keeping count of the class.
5. Provides a safe, loving, caring Christian atmosphere and environment to promotes the child’s spiritual, social, physical, personal, and emotional development.
6. Implements the academic curriculum chosen by the Director & Board of Education, in the areas of language, math, science, social studies, physical development, music, Bible, and art.
a. Prepares weekly excellent lesson plan that cohesively aligns with school-wide curriculum, is posted inside the classroom, with detailed instructions and descriptions of each activity and its purpose. All lesson plans should be turned in to the Director weekly for accountability in excellence and quality.
7. Occasionally may lead childcare for children staying during Extended Care.
8. Attend workshops, seminars, and professional training courses to maintain log of 24 hours of AZ Department of Health Services mandated hours; maintains record on the AZ Workforce Registry website; Attends Lutheran Educators Conference with school staff every November
9. Follows Matthew 18 in conflict resolution with all team members. If there’s a conflict, talk to the person with clear and honest communication. Then talk with the Director and Pastor for further conflict resolution. Speak well of one another.
10. Maintains a Christian professional relationship with colleagues, parents, and students. Maintains a professional appearance with modest appropriate apparel for the position. Able to get on the floor and play with children.
11. Attends and participates in weekly staff meetings, monthly Board of Education meetings, and any other meetings or activities as instructed by the Senior Pastor or Preschool Director.
12. Positively promotes and publicizes the preschool program.
13. Reports any accidents or incidents that cause physical or emotional injury to a child to the Director’s office as soon as possible; all reports are documented in ProCare
14. Provides consistent evaluation of each child, through parent teacher conferences each semester and evaluation forms as described by the Ages & Stages documents.
EXPECTED HOURS AND USE OF HOURS WITH THIS POSITION (25 HOURS TOTAL PER WEEK- avg):
- Classroom Teaching: M-F: 8am-12pm; 20 hours weekly
- Weekly Staff Meeting: 1 hour weekly
- Additional Teacher Prep Time (you choose the hours, can be on or off campus, as long as you are adequately prepared for your teaching time): 4 hours weekly.
- Other duties as assigned- varies by week/month/season.
