Job Summary:

If you are a detail-oriented professional passionate about billing and coding in the EMS industry, we invite you to join our team as a Certified Ambulance Biller / Coding Specialist. This key position involves reviewing patient care reports, applying the proper ambulance billing codes, and ensuring compliance with relevant federal and state regulations to facilitate timely reimbursement. Our ideal candidate possesses a solid understanding of ambulance billing practices and has experience in accurate documentation review and denial prevention.

Responsibilities:

  • Review Patient Care Reports (PCRs), run sheets, and supplemental documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Apply the correct ambulance billing codes (HCPCS, CPT, ICD 10) based on documentation and payer requirements.
  • Determine appropriate service levels (BLS, ALS1, ALS2, SCT, mileage, etc.) by assessing medical necessity.
  • Input and validate charges in the billing system before claim submission.
  • Ensure adherence to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer guidelines.
  • Identify any missing or insufficient documentation and coordinate follow-up with field staff or supervisors.
  • Process claims efficiently, resolve edits, and prepare bills for submission.
  • Review and rectify rejected or denied claims to facilitate swift resolution.
  • Maintain accurate records and consistently meet productivity and quality benchmarks.
  • Stay informed on updates regarding EMS billing regulations and coding changes.
  • Assist with internal audits and quality assurance reviews as necessary.
  • Possess a strong understanding of medical necessity requirements.
  • Have knowledge of reimbursement guidelines and compliance laws, including HIPAA and CMS regulations.
  • Demonstrate accuracy in data entry and coding tasks.
  • Work independently while managing deadlines effectively.
  • Collaborate comfortably with EMS crews, supervisors, and the billing team.

Requirements:

  • Required: Certification as a Certified Ambulance Coder (CAC), Certified Ambulance Documentation Specialist (CADS), or another equivalent EMS billing certification.
  • Preferred: Additional certifications such as CPB, CPC, or other medical billing/coding credentials.
  • 1-3 years of experience in ambulance billing, medical billing, or coding is preferred but not mandatory with proper certification.
  • Strong knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid ambulance billing regulations.
  • Ability to interpret medical documentation and apply the correct codes.
  • High attention to detail coupled with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and follow-up capabilities.
  • Proficiency in using billing software systems and Microsoft Office applications.
