Job Description
The Carpenter position is part of the Campus Facilities Management (CFM) team and is responsible for performing skilled work on a journey level in the construction, maintenance, repair and alteration of campus structures and equipment. All work is subject to spot checking and inspection for conformance to specifications and accepted standards of the trade.
Key Responsibilities
Perform repair, service and maintenance of the physical structure of one or more buildings.
Perform or assist with construction, maintenance, repair, alteration of campus structures, equipment and other building components and accessories. Assemble materials and tools. Clean, sharpen and adjust tools as required.
Construct, erect, install and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, using carpenter's hand tools and power tools in conformance with local building codes. Prepare layout, using rule, framing square, and calipers. Mark cutting and assembly lines on materials, using pencil, chalk, and marking gage. Shape materials to prescribed measurements, using saws, chisels, and planes. Assemble, cut and shape materials and fasten them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue. Verify trueness of structures with plumb bob and carpenter's level.
May study blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required (such as lumber or fiberboard) and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated as well as preparation of cost estimates, maintenance of records and preparation of reports.
- May perform or assist in performing any of the following:
- erect metal or wood framework for structures and lay sub-flooring;
- cover sub-floor with building paper to keep out moisture and lay hardwood, parquet, and wood-strip-block floors by nailing floors to sub-floor or cementing them to mastic or asphalt base;
- install floor coverings, roofing, tar, screens, cabinets, window glass, partitions, locks and other miscellaneous materials and fixtures;
- repair and install wood floors; build stairs, windows, and doors, and lay out and install partitions and cabinet work;
- apply shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls;
- fit and install prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates;
- construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete;
- erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level;
- hang sheetrock;
- install grid ceilings.
- Perform construction, maintenance, repair and alterations of the building structure. May repair woodwork, install screens, cabinets and window glass, repair doors and door closures.
- Utilize a variety of necessary tools and mechanical equipment for each trade required for the repair, maintenance and service of the building. Notify supervisor of tasks requiring other trades staff.
- May perform or assist with preparation of cost estimates, material orders, reports, and maintenance of records.
- Perform other duties as assigned

Shift
7:00am - 3:30pm, Monday through Friday
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities are acquired.
- Four years actual work experience and training including the equivalent of apprenticeship or vocational training in a building trade is required
- Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in the trade.
- A valid Missouri driver’s license is required.
- Ability to read blueprints, plans, and drawings.
- Ability daily to:
- Grasp, lift, carry and set down heavy objects (50-75 lbs.)
- Shovel snow, climb ladders and operate heavy power equipment.
- Depending on nature of work performed, may be required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as outlined in the “Industrial Standard for Respirator Use”.
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $25.00 to $28.00 hourly.
This position is eligible for a $1,500 hiring incentive (see HR-104 Hiring Incentives for Faculty and Staff).
Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
