Position: General Production Labor- 1st Shift - Portland, IN
Job Summary
The General Production Worker (GPW) processes, screens, and packages product to meet or exceed customer expectations while adhering to safety, GMP, and quality processes. The role requires maintaining personal hygiene and supporting a clean, safe production environment.
Shift Hours & Compensation
Shift 1: 7:00am–3:00pm
Shift 2: 3:00pm–11:00pm
Shift 3: 11:00pm–7:00am
Starting pay: $19.20/hr, with a shift increase for 2nd and 3rd shifts.
Note: This location is not accepting rehires of prior Tyson Foods employees.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect product on various lines for foreign material and to ensure compliance with product specifications (color, size, shape, etc.).
- Properly stack product to maintain accurate case counts for each product.
- Assemble and tape boxes at a fast pace to keep up with production lines.
- Pack product in boxes according to customer specifications, ensuring correct weight and product count.
- Train new hires and transferred team members when required.
- Learn and perform all general production positions; rotate regularly across corn and flour departments.
- Follow general manufacturing, safety, and quality processes.
- Immediately communicate any product, equipment, quality, safety, or HR concerns to the lead or supervisor.
- Complete ongoing production, quality, safety, and other required training.
- Maintain cleanliness/organization of the production area, keeping it free of debris and potential foreign material, and return equipment/tools at shift end.
- Notify Supervisor and/or QA of contamination concerns.
- Follow all company policies and procedures, both written and verbal.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Complete the GPW Training Checklist tasks within the expected training period.
- Follow directions and stay on task with little supervision.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and management.
- Read and understand GMP operation standards, manuals, and related documentation.
Physical Requirements
- Perform duties requiring flexibility of wrists and hands, strength, walking, bending, standing, twisting, pushing/pulling, and lifting (up to 50lb) regularly.
- Stand or walk on a concrete floor for up to eight (8) hours a day.
Safety & Training
Job‑specific training will be conducted by designated trainers, managers, supervisors, colleagues, and subject matter experts. Training may include general manufacturing processes (GMP), job‑safety analysis, lockout‑tagout, ongoing quality, safety, HR, and departmental training. Monthly safety and GMP topics will be covered by the immediate supervisor.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Smock, hair net, ear plugs, slip‑resistant shoes, safety glasses, gloves, boots, aprons. Personal hygiene and dress standards must be met.
Employees will be exposed to wet/humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, allergens (soy, wheat, milk), extreme weather, moving equipment, and loud noise requiring hearing protection.
