DESCRIPTION

The Onondaga County Health Department is seeking a dedicated candidate to join our team as a Public Health Social Worker I and help address the social factors that shape health outcomes in our community.

In this role, you will work within programs that address critical issues such as infant mortality, substance abuse, HIV infection, violence prevention, and barriers to medical care. You’ll collaborate with professionals across disciplines, support community outreach efforts, and play an essential part in connecting individuals to the services they need.

  • Promote awareness and use of health, medical, and community services.
  • Conduct educational activities addressing risk behaviors related to HIV, infant mortality, substance use, and violence.
  • Participate in research studies and inter‑agency case reviews.
  • Work with community organizations to identify services and develop strategies to improve public health.
  • Assist with program development, grant preparation, and training materials.
  • Attend professional meetings and contribute to ongoing public health initiatives.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to subordinate staff delivering client‑centered services.
  • Offer consultation to colleagues within the Health Department and community programs.
  • Support public health preparedness activities as assigned.
  • Interact respectfully and effectively with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

Candidates must be licensed as a Master Social Worker by the New York State Department of Education

Position Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm. Candidates must have the ability to work occasional flexible hours, which may include evenings and weekends.

Note: This is a grant-funded position.
