Position Overview

The primary objective of EMS is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation, while preserving patients' dignity and ensuring community safety. EMS personnel respond to emergency calls, provide out-of-hospital care, and transport patients to medical facilities as authorized by state protocols.

Essential Job Functions

  • Attend instruction sessions for orientation, EMS operations, compliance, emergency vehicle operations, maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
  • Provide out-of-hospital care to patients and safe ambulance transport in consideration of statewide protocols and medical command direction under WV EMS Rules and Regulations.
  • Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 12 Sibs alone and, with assistance, 250 LBS at a height of 33 inches for a distance of 10 feet.
  • Have the ability to hear, comprehend and respond to spoken information from co‑workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers and sounds common to the emergency scene.
  • Verbally communicate in person, via telephone and telecommunications using the English language.
  • Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions; document patient information using an approved WV OEMS record system.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills needed for quality patient care; bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Inspect EMS equipment to ensure supplies, verify proper operation, refuel and check fluids; report needed maintenance.
  • Respond to callback or call-in emergency situations.
  • Assist other emergency personnel and complete tasks assigned by supervisors.
  • Maintain professional appearance; perform general maintenance of stations, training facilities and ambulances.
  • Operate event stand‑by operations at sporting events, community festivals and other large gatherings.
  • Respond to hazardous material incidents at the first responder level; function in other uncommon situations and in natural disasters.
  • Understand stress response and methods for personal well‑being; understand body substance isolation and HIPAA patient privacy.
  • Interact professionally with outside agencies and medical facility staff.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance operation and use of EMS equipment.
  • Ability to learn through training, using a variety of EMS methods.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of the street systems and community layout.
  • Obtain skills including airway opening, ventilation, CPR, and proper use of medications and defibrillator devices; provide trauma care such as hemorrhage control, shock treatment, wound bandaging, and immobilization.

Special Requirements and Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of workforce evaluations or equivalent educational screening.
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving history.
  • Drug‑free company; must pass initial and random screenings.
  • Background checks: OIG Excluded Parties, criminal history, driving history, child/elder abuse, reference.
  • Certification requirements: valid telephone number, CPR (Health Care Provider level), EMT‑8 certified by WV OEMS, proof of TB and Hepatitis vaccinations.

Working Environment / Conditions

EMS operations occur 24/7 year‑round in all weather conditions. Personnel must respond at a moment’s notice and maintain field operations until the situation is resolved. EMS crew members must be prepared for diverse patient types and stressful situations; safety, professionalism, and compassion are critical traits.
