Job Title: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER
Provide social, emotional, and behavioral support to elementary students through assessment, intervention, and collaboration. This role oversees special education eligibility evaluations, development and documentation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Functional Behavior Assessments, and behavior support plans; delivers of individual, group, and classroom services; and collaborates with families, staff, and community agencies to support student success and compliance with state and federal requirements.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Social Work (required)
- State of Michigan Certification as a School Social Worker (required)
- Valid social worker license (LLMSW or LMSW) issued by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) (required)
- Prior experience as a school social worker (preferred)
- Training in CPI, Trauma Informed Teaching, START, and Restorative Practices or willingness to be trained
- Knowledge of current research-based practices in Social Thinking and Mindfulness or willingness to be trained
- Knowledge of school-based interventions for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional/social disorders, etc.
- Experience working with students in individual, small group, or classroom settings
- Experience creating and implementing high-quality Functional Behavior Assessments as well as developing and implementing effective positive behavior support plans
- Knowledge of State of Michigan and federal rules and regulations regarding special education, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Multi-Tiered System of Supports
- Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills (written, verbal, and listening skills)
- Proficiency with technology and electronic documentation of student data
Essential Functions:
- Ability to build effective and positive professional relationships with students, parents, and staff
- Ability to assess students for special education eligibility (e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder, emotional impairment, other health impairment, etc.) and the need for social work services and interventions
- Proficiency in developing high-quality IEPs, PLAAFP statements, and measurable goals and objectives
- Ability to consistently document SSW services, track progress on IEP goals and objectives, and complete Service Capture/Medicaid logs
- Ability to provide classroom lessons regarding social skills, friendships, etc.
- Demonstrated willingness and commitment to actively participate in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum development, school improvement planning, and leadership opportunities that support continuous growth and student success
- Knowledge of community resources and ability to serve as a liaison between school, parents, students, and outside agencies
- Understanding and empathy regarding the needs of students with disabilities and their families
- Ability to abide by all district policies and procedures and to demonstrate competencies specified in the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education
- Willingness and ability to maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance
- Ability to complete other duties as assigned
