About the Eugene Police Department

The Eugene Police Department (EPD) is a professional law‑enforcement agency serving the city of Eugene, Oregon. We work in partnership with the community to promote safety and security, enforce laws, prevent crime, and safeguard constitutional rights.

Position Summary

This entry‑level police officer position includes a variety of law‑enforcement duties. Officers serve as first responders to incidents, perform investigations, enforce laws, make arrests, preserve crime‑scene evidence, record reports, and conduct preventative community policing across diverse neighborhoods.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to incidents and serve as the department’s direct link with the public.
  • Investigate incident scenes, assess appropriate actions, and enforce laws and ordinances.
  • Patrol assigned areas, make arrests, and preserve crime‑scene evidence.
  • Summarize events in official reports.
  • Conduct preventive community policing in diverse neighborhoods.

Qualifications

  • At least 21 years of age by December 30, 2026.
  • No felony convictions; no Class A misdemeanor convictions within 24 months of application.
  • Must be able to work various shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays; current 4/10 work schedule applies to patrol teams.
  • Meet state requirements for vision, hearing, and DPSST basic law‑enforcement certification standards (see Oregon Administrative Rule 259‑008‑0010).

Minimum Requirements

High‑school diploma or GED.

At least two years of work experience, college coursework, or military experience.

License and Certification

  • Valid Oregon driver’s license or ability to obtain one by the date of hire.
  • Must pass a driving‑records check; maintain satisfactory driving record during employment (ORS 803.355).
  • CPR certification within twelve months of appointment.

Background and Physical Requirements

  • Pass a thorough police background investigation.
  • Pass physical assessment, drug screen, hearing and visual acuity tests as required by DPSST (see Oregon Administrative Rules 259‑008‑0011).
  • Statement to refrain from using tobacco products while on duty.
  • Fluency in a language other than English is desirable; preference given for Spanish or sign language.

Salary and Benefits

  • Entry‑level officers start at Step 1 ($38.87 hourly). Additional steps increase hourly rate up to $49.55 at Step 6.
  • Annual salary ranges from $80,849.60 to $103,064.00 depending on step and experience.
  • Benefits include health, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement, holiday and vacation leave, sick leave, and more.
  • Bilingual pay available – up to an extra 5 % of base salary for qualified language proficiency.

Selection Process

Dates are given as follows (first‑come, first‑served basis):

  • ORPAT practice session – Saturday, July 25, 2026 9‑11 a.m. (optional). Apply by July 23.
  • Written test and ORPAT – Saturday, August 22, 2026.
  • Interviews – August 23‑25, 2026 (Sunday‑Tuesday).
  • Full background completion – by October 22, 2026.
  • Chief interview – October 28, 2026.
  • Psychological evaluation and medical exam – November 4‑11, 2026.
  • Projected hire date – December 14, 2026.
