Job Title Firefighter/Paramedic
Position Description The FY27 Proposed Budget includes an increase to the pay range:
$71,225 - $133,766 (Bill 32-26).
Provide emergency medical services to the highest level of certification; operate advanced life support or basic life support medical unit and/or other emergency firefighting and rescue equipment; participate in drills and training exercises; and perform fire prevention inspections, public education safety presentations, and fire suppression activities.
This full-time, permanent, safety-sensitive position is inthe Fire Department and may require shift work.

Description of In-person Administration of Written Examination and Oral Assessment:
Two (2) components:
Written examination and the structured oral process (SOP) - which is a video-based oral assessment.
These two components will be given in one day, Saturday or Sunday, over the weekend (July 18th-19th).
Candidates will be invited to either Saturday or Sunday.
Everyone will take the written test and oral assessment back-to-back on the same day.
Candidates will be moved to individual oral assessment rooms as they complete the written test and as testing rooms become available.
Candidates may expect a testing period of two (2) to seven (7) hours, with an anticipated average of three and a half (3.
5) hours.
Candidate Test Orientation Guide:
Anne Arundel Co Firefighter 2026 Orientation Guide (Download PDF reader) No electronic devices, including smartwatches and smart glasses, or physical media will be allowed at the testing location; however, candidates are encouraged to bring food and drinks in a small cooler or bag.
Please clearly mark your cooler/bag, as they will be held in a separate location during testing.
Calculators, pocket dictionaries, and other testing aids will not be allowed.
A VALID PICTURE ID MUST BE PRESENTED AT THE TIME OF THE WRITTEN EXAM - YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO TAKE THE EXAM IF THIS IS NOT PROVIDED.

; certification at hire as a nationally registered paramedic and licensed as a paramedic by the Maryland State EMS Board; a valid commercial class B motor vehicle operator's license; must be at least 18 years of age prior to the start date of the academy [January/February 2026].
- NOTE:
The position requires candidates to be Licensed as a Paramedic by The Maryland State EMS Board.
Therefore, candidates will be required to be Active in the National Paramedic Registry and obtain the Maryland License within six (6) months of hire.
- NOTE:
All candidates must have a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license to apply.
A non-commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license, or the equivalent license, will be issued upon graduation from the Anne Arundel County Fire Training Academy program.
Please Note:
This is a combination Fire Department.
Paramedics are required to be trained and certified as Firefighters.
NOTE:
This is an entry-level position; NO PRIOR FIRE SERVICE RELATED EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
You must meet the minimum qualifications for number one (1).
OR 2.
Graduation from high school; successful completion of the Anne Arundel County Fire Training Academy program; one year as a Firefighter II in the classified service of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department; certification as a nationally registered paramedic and licensed as a paramedic by the Maryland State EMS Board; and a valid non-commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license; NOTE:
This is a Safety Sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.
