JOB

GENERAL PURPOSE

Protect life and property; preserve the peace and good order of the community; furnish various law enforcement services to enhance the smooth and orderly operation of the city.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Immediately supervised by Patrol Sergeants.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

The senior Patrol Officer may be required to supervise a shift in the absence of a Patrol Sergeant. Patrol Officers are encouraged to contact the Chief, Captain, or any Sergeant on or off duty for assistance with difficult supervisory situations

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Preserves the public peace.

B. Prevents crime.

C. Detects and arrests violators of the law.

D. Protects life and property.

E. Enforces all criminal and traffic laws of the State of Wisconsin and the ordinances of the City of Cedarburg.

F. Patrols the city and checks buildings to ensure that they are in a safe condition and that no forced entries have occurred.

G. Investigates suspicious or unusual incidents occurring during his/her tour of duty and conducts preliminary investigations of all actual crimes, which he/she discovers or is assigned to investigate.

H. Apprehends and arrests for felony, misdemeanor, city ordinance offenses in accordance with city ordinances, state statutes, and Department orders, rules, and policies.

I. Investigates complaints of a non-criminal nature; i.e. family disputes, missing persons and injured people, and assesses each individual case to determine appropriate action.

J. Responds to fire and rescue calls to render assistance to victims and assist the fire department within the scope of his/her training.

K. Establishes sources of intelligence and information.

L. Conducts traffic accident investigations, completes required forms, including the identification of all passengers, vehicles, witnesses, location, injuries, date and time; and issues citations where appropriate and consistent with departmental procedure.

M. Enforces traffic and parking regulations through visual and radar patrol.

N. Assists in the maintenance of traffic control for efficient flow through the city.

O. Observes and searches the scene of a crime for physical evidence and collects photographs, and/or preserves evidence found for possible use in future legal proceedings.

P. Completes special investigations when assigned.

Q. Serves as a police escort when assigned.

R. Provides traffic and/or crowd control at special events.

S. Furnishes assistance and information to citizens and visitors.

T. Completes follow-up investigations of criminal and misdemeanor offenses and ordinance violations as required or assigned by higher authority.

U. Notifies dispatch when fires are observed and responds to fire alarms.

V. Completes all required records and reports of activities.

W. Serves as a witness in court cases and is responsible for obeying all lawful subpoenas.

X. Performs specialized assignments as may be assigned by the Chief of Police or other ranking officer. Examples of specialized assignments include, but are not limited to; Breath Test Operator, Field Training Officer; Firearms Instructor.

Y. Requests specialized assistance, as may be required, to handle specific problems encountered; i.e., Evidence Technician, Detective, etc.

Z. Responsible for checking squad room memo spindle for special watches, intra-departmental correspondence, teletypes and other information.

AA. Responsible for checking warrant and suspension/revocation lists located in squad room.

BB. Serves subpoenas and summonses as required.

CC. Attends training sessions and departmental meetings as may be required.

DD. Maintains a courteous and professional demeanor when interacting with members of the public.

EE. Establishes and maintains a rapport with all members and segments of the community to enhance the police image and instill a respect for law and order.

FF. Reports any circumstances which may present a public safety hazard and/or takes appropriate measures to reduce or remove such hazards.

GG. Observes parks, schools, and other places where children may gather for the purpose of investigating suspicious persons or activities that might be of danger to children.

HH. Notifies dispatch of location and reason for being out of service; location of vehicle stops and vehicle information; and all requests for police service.

II. Remains obedient and responsible to all verbal and written orders issued by superiors and to all work assignments transmitted to him/her by authorized persons.

JJ. Performs suchs other duties as may be required by state law, city ordinance, Departmental rules, or as may be assigned by a superior officer.
