Detention Attendant

Responsible for the custody of prisoners, juvenile delinquents, as well as lost children, and for the clean and orderly condition of female detention facilities at police headquarters. Work is performed in accordance with well established procedures or prior instructions with supervisory assistance ordinarily available in unusual or difficult situations. No supervision is exercised over other employees.

Responsibilities

• Search prisoners for concealed evidence or weapons, secure prisoners in detention cell block.
• Inspect detention quarters to maintain order and discipline, observe physical and mental condition of prisoners, and provide prisoner care services.
• Investigate disturbances, handle behavior problems of prisoners, and visitors, assist police officers in quieting disturbed or unruly prisoners.
• Administer first aid, and arrange for medical attention when necessary.
• Maintain the clean and orderly condition of detention quarters, secure restaurant means for prisoners.
• Escort prisoners to and from court, guard prisoners closely during court sessions and visiting periods, release prisoners as instructed.
• Provide care and attention for lost children.
• Perform related work as required.

Qualifications and Skills

• Working knowledge of police detention and first aid procedures.
• Working knowledge of routine cleaning and housekeeping methods.
• Ability to enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with police officers, prisoners and visitors.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of two years of experience in institutional housekeeping or attendant work.
