Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

This phlebotomist role focuses on providing high-quality blood collection services in outpatient clinic and draw station settings. You will perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients across all age groups, including pediatric patients and those who are difficult draws, while maintaining strict safety and compliance standards. You will also support the team by helping to orient and train patient service technicians and by promoting a culture of patient-centered care and excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients of all age groups in outpatient clinics and draw stations.
  • Conduct pediatric blood collections with care, following all safety and comfort measures appropriate for minors.
  • Handle difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and other outpatient settings, using advanced phlebotomy skills.
  • Process specimens accurately and promptly, following established laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards and apply them consistently in daily work.
  • Effectively communicate the importance of compliance and safety to colleagues and reinforce adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Provide orientation and training for patient service technicians, sharing best practices in phlebotomy, safety, and customer service.
  • Use laboratory information systems (such as Cerner or similar) to enter, verify, and track patient and specimen information.
  • Deliver professional, courteous customer service to patients, clinicians, and coworkers, ensuring a positive experience at all times.
  • Participate in an on-call schedule, typically averaging around 32 hours per week, with flexibility to work within a range of approximately 24 to 40 hours as needed.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and registered nurses when interacting with minors, ensuring all such interactions remain appropriately supervised.
  • Follow all clinic and draw station procedures for patient identification, specimen labeling, handling, storage, and transport.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients of all age groups.
  • Demonstrated experience performing pediatric blood collections.
  • Ability to successfully perform difficult blood draws in outpatient and medical office building environments.
  • Hands-on experience with specimen processing and handling in a clinical or laboratory setting.
  • Comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety regulations related to phlebotomy and laboratory operations.
  • Strong communication skills to explain and reinforce safety and compliance practices to other employees.
  • Ability to provide orientation and training to patient service technicians in phlebotomy procedures and workflows.
  • CPT I license.
  • High school diploma (HS Diploma).
  • Computer literacy and the ability to work confidently with laboratory information systems, such as Cerner or similar platforms.
  • Solid customer service skills and a patient-focused approach.
  • Willingness and availability to participate in an on-call schedule, with flexibility in weekly hours.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience working as a phlebotomist, lab assistant, or in a similar clinical role.
  • Experience working in outpatient clinics or draw station environments.
  • Familiarity with multiple draw station workflows and coordination across different clinic locations.
  • Ability to adapt to varying patient volumes and schedules across multiple sites.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling, documentation, and data entry.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and compassionate when working with anxious, pediatric, or difficult-to-draw patients.

Work Environment

This role is based in outpatient clinics and draw stations located across North County and surrounding areas, including multiple sites in and around Anaheim, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Yorba Linda, and nearby communities. You will primarily work in clinical draw stations where patients come for scheduled or walk-in blood collection services. The environment is professional, fast-paced, and patient-facing, with frequent interaction with clinicians, supervisors, registered nurses, and other healthcare staff. You will use standard phlebotomy equipment, specimen processing supplies, and laboratory information systems such as Cerner or similar platforms.
