Job Title Phlebotomist _ Pharmacology/Toxicology Organization SOM-Pharmacology/Toxicology-Operations Location/s Main Campus Jackson Job Summary To perform a variety of venipuncture techniques and collect and process blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This job profile may require call subject to the department’s discretion. Education & Experience Education and Experience Required: High School Diploma/GED Certifications, Licenses, or Registration required: N/A Preferred Qualifications: Phlebotomist Certification from ASCP CVAS-Certified Venous Access Specialist ASPT American Society Phlebotomist Technician NHA National Healthcareer Association NCCT Phlebotomy National Center for Competency Testing ACAH American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals Medical2 NPA National Phlebotomy Association Phlebotomy Technician from MedCA, Becksford, or AMT American Medical Technologists NPS National Performance Specialist, AAH American Allied Health, or NHOC National Healthcare Organization Certification Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of blood processing and handling procedures. Knowledge of relevant clinical and patient care regulations, policies, procedures, and standards. Knowledge of infection control and sterile procedures. Interpersonal skills to allay patient fears and interact with staff. Ability to perform standard phlebotomy procedures and techniques. Ability to comply with clinical protocol, specifications, and procedures. Ability to complete and maintain documents and records. Responsibilities Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, using standard equipment such as vaccutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes, and butterfly needles. Confers with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explains procedures, allays fears, and elicits cooperation. Prepares, processes, labels, and stores patient specimens and samples according to established procedures. Maintains inventory of supplies; stocks supplies on carts and hand trays. Performs quality control procedures to maintain compliance with applicable regulations. Complies with safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards and practices.
