Substitute Teacher / Tutor (English)

Department: Education

Reports To: Superintendent of Education

Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Summary

Mooseheart Child City & School is seeking a dedicated Substitute English Teacher / Tutor to support the educational success and personal growth of our students. This role ensures continuity of instruction by implementing established curriculum, maintaining a structured learning environment, and supporting students both in and out of the classroom. The ideal candidate is student-focused, flexible, and committed to modeling positive behavior aligned with the Mooseheart Model of Care.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Deliver instruction using approved curriculum and effective teaching techniques.
  • Develop long-range lesson plans and clear learning objectives for students.
  • Monitor student progress regularly and adjust instruction as needed.
  • Provide additional academic support outside regular classroom hours for students needing extra help.
  • Address disciplinary concerns in alignment with Mooseheart's behavior management model.
  • Model and promote socially appropriate behavior, including professional dress, communication, and conduct.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with educational best practices.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding youth, staff, and community information.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by the Superintendent of Education, Assistant Principal, or Executive Director of Mooseheart Operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field (required).
  • Valid Illinois teaching license or eligibility to meet Illinois certification requirements.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Strong communication, classroom management, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with behavior management preferred.
  • Prior experience working with youth or in a supervisory capacity preferred.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background check, including DCFS fingerprint clearance.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: Starting at $35,000 per year (aligned with the teacher salary schedule).
