They work with a variety of tools and equipment, such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and computer-controlled machines, to fabricate parts for use in manufacturing and production processes.

Essential Functions:

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Set up and operate machine tools to perform machining operations, such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and boring, to produce metal parts to required specifications
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine machining requirements, dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and materials for each job, and set up machines according to work instructions and safety guidelines
  • Inspect machined parts using precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges, to ensure conformance to specifications and quality standards
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with machine tools, tooling, or workpieces during the machining process, and make adjustments or repairs as needed to maintain quality and efficiency
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on machine tools, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs, to ensure optimal performance and longevity
  • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures at all times, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), following machine safety guidelines, and reporting safety hazards or concerns
  • Maintain accurate records of machining operations, including job setups, tooling changes, production counts, and quality inspection results, in accordance with company policies and procedures

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

The successful candidate should:

  • Understanding of various types of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, drills, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines. Knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, and applications of each type of machine tool.
  • Knowledge of different types of metals and materials commonly used in machining processes, including their properties, characteristics, and machining techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine machining requirements, dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes.
  • Understanding of machining processes such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and boring, including knowledge of cutting speeds, feeds, and tooling requirements for each process.
  • Familiarity with precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and gauge blocks to measure and inspect machined parts for accuracy and quality.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures related to machining operations, including proper handling of machine tools, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and adherence to safety guidelines.
