Position: Driver (NON-EMT)

The Ambulance Driver (Non-EMT) safely operates ambulances and emergency response vehicles to support emergency medical services in pre-hospital, transport, and inter-facility settings across Alaska. This role focuses on safe vehicle operation under challenging Alaska conditions while assisting EMS crews with patient movement, equipment handling, and operational support. The driver works in partnership with certified EMTs, Paramedics, or other medical personnel and operates under the agency’s policies and the department-approved physician medical director.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to 911 calls, scheduled transports, inter-facility transfers, and special events in a safe, timely, and professional manner.
  • Safely operate ambulances and emergency response vehicles under varied Alaska road, weather, trail, and remote environmental conditions.
  • Assist EMS crew members with patient lifting, moving, loading/unloading, packaging, and safe transport.
  • Help maintain vehicle readiness: perform pre- and post-trip inspections, restock supplies, clean the unit, and report maintenance needs.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, crew members, receiving facilities, and online medical control via radio and phone.
  • Support medevac operations as ground crew by assisting with patient packaging, loading, and transfer to fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft.
  • Complete required documentation, including vehicle logs, incident reports, and maintenance records.
  • Maintain station quarters, equipment, and vehicles in a clean and operational state at the start and end of each shift.
  • Participate in agency training, safety briefings, and quality improvement activities.
  • Provide courteous and professional assistance to patients, families, and healthcare partners.

Requirements

  • Valid Alaska driver’s license with a clean driving record acceptable to the agency’s insurance carrier (CDL preferred or required depending on vehicle type).
  • Minimum 19–21 years of age (depending on insurance requirements).
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, DOT physical, and fit-for-duty evaluation.
  • Current AHA BLS / Healthcare Provider CPR certification (or ability to obtain shortly after hire).
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and move patients and equipment (typically 150+ lbs with assistance) in austere or remote environments.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call duty in Alaska’s unique conditions.
  • No EMT certification required; however, prior EMS, military, fire, or driving experience is highly preferred.
