BASIC FUNCTION

To protect the general public from injury or property loss through fire fighting activity, first aid, rescue, hazardous?materials response, and airport security. To maintain Fire Department apparatus and equipment in proper working condition. And, to accurately record appropriate safety and functional test records on all assigned apparatus and equipment.

Job Duties

STATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Performs general and aircraft fire fighting work through extinguishing or preventing hostile fires. Lies out and connects hose; holds and directs hose streams; raises and climbs ladders.
  • Removes persons from danger; administers first aid to injured persons.
  • Participates in fire prevention programs through building inspections and public education.
  • Performs major and minor vehicle repair on fire department apparatus including the complete removal, repair rebuild and replacement of engines, transmissions, pumps, tanks, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, and body components. The work is performed on apparatus that is not part of the county fleet repair and replacement system.
  • Welds both steel and aluminum, and manufactures necessary parts utilizing fabricating equipment to include lathes, vertical mills, metal shears and breaks.
  • Tests and repairs self-contained breathing apparatus, chain saws, rescue saws, rescue jaws, and generators; and re-couples hoses.
  • Tests fire hose, ladders and fire pumps to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards.
  • Accurately records information detailing the maintenance, repair, cost accounting, safety, functions, and testing of all apparatus assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Six (6) months education in an accredited trade school with major skills in diesel and gas automotive repair and service, welding, and machine shop (lathe and milling machine skills); OR, any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Mechanical repair experience with heavy diesel equipment, on and off road heavy equipment, and Airport Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter (ARFF) and Crash/Rescue equipment preferred. Level B/Commercial Driver's License (B/CDL), Automotive Standard Excellence (ASE), Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) qualifications preferred. Must pass job related tests.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A job offer will be conditioned on satisfactory passing of a physical agility test, a criminal history background check, and a medical examination meeting the NFPA 1582 Standard On Medical Requirements for Firefighters.
  • Must pass a fingerprint-based Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) as required by TSA.
  • After employment, an annual physical is required.
  • A valid Washington State Driver's License is required for employment.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Washington Commercial Driver's License that includes a minimum of a Class "B", air brakes, and a Tank Vehicle endorsement within thirty (30) days of employment is required. This will require participation in the County's Random Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
  • Possession of a valid First Aid Card and CPR Certification within sixty (60) days of employment is required.
  • Completion of the basic FAA approved Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Class within ninety (90) days of employment, or as modified by the Public Safety Manager, is required.
  • Graduation from the Washington State Fire Academy within twelve (12) months of employment, or as modified by the Public Safety Manager, is required.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification within thirty-six (36) months of employment, or as modified by the Public Safety Manager, is required.
