The Lab Pack Chemist I performs various assigned tasks and physical labor to ensure proper off-site treatment and disposal of customers’ hazardous waste materials in accordance with environmentally responsible and cost-effective practices and Clean Earth policies, practices, and procedures.
Primary Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
Handle hazardous materials including inventorying, identifying, segregating, and packaging waste material in accordance with Lab Pack policies, procedures and practices and all applicable regulations.
Perform onsite services which may include waste collection, consolidation (i.e., bulking, repackaging), sampling, safety/compliance inspections, and other related activities required by the customer/contract.
Assist other business groups, i.e., de-pack, retail and HHW, for both internally and onsite as needed.
Prepare shipment of packaged waste by inspecting, labeling, marking, and loading into the transport vehicle.
Complete documentation including shipping papers, Land Disposal Restrictions (LDRs) accurately and timely.
Manage evaluations, certifications, and other required documentation in accordance with appropriate regulations and procedures.
Report any incidents, injuries or safety concerns to management in a timely manner.
Adhere to and abide by CE safety and security policies and procedures (e.g. Cardinal Rules, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and Transportation Manual).
Other duties and responsibilities as reasonably assigned by management.
Work Environment:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods including climbing in and out of the back of a commercial truck.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly without assistance and up to 75 pounds unassisted on occasion.
Ability to push and pull up to 500 pounds using a pallet jack, hand truck, or other device to assist.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and indoors in non-climate-controlled environments.
Visual acuity to read labels and documentation and sufficient depth perception to safely operate forklifts.
Ability to hear vehicle warning chimes, alarms, and other audible safety signals.
Ability and willingness to wear company-issued personal protection equipment (PPE), including, but not limited to, safety glasses, hard hat, steel-toed boots, gloves, Tyvek coveralls, and respirator.
Subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving vehicles, electrical current, and exposure to chemicals.
Ability to work overtime hours as needed based on business needs.
Based on service center level and location, this position may require moderate to extensive travel with 20% overnight travel (with paid hotel expenses and a nightly per diem).
Education : (BA or BS degree required or preferred) Associate’s degree in area of General Science
Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
Experience : ( Required minimum of years of relevant experience.) Must be 21 years of age in accordance with FMCSA guidelines
Driver’s license with safe driving record and ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of hire
Current Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC) and valid TWIC card or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
HAZMAT and/or Tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
Completion of 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training
40 hours of de-packing experience
Skills : (The skills listed are the abilities and knowledge required to perform the job effectively .) Basic understanding of chemistry through general chemistry or biology
Familiarity with EPA and DOT guidelines
Ability to operate powered equipment such as a forklift
Ability to operate a computer with Windows-based programs
Strong communication skills and ability to politely deal with customers and team members
Ability to work independently and resolve issues with minimal direction
Ability to pass a DOT physical, drug test, and/or DEA background check
Ability to complete Clean Earth Lab Pack Training/Onboarding (24 hours) after hire
Ability to read a map
Fluency in verbal and written English
