CURRENT OPENING
There are currently multiple part‑time openings (10 months, 20 to 32.5 hours per week).
Salary placement will be on Range 10 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($18.34 per hour) of this salary range.
APPLICANT FILING INFORMATION
The recruitment is open to the public. An eligibility list will be established to fill vacancies for full‑time, part‑time, evening, summer, and substitute positions throughout the duration of the eligibility list.
Eligibility lists typically last for six months. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Incumbents must apply for and obtain an Associate Teacher Permit through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. To maintain employment, incumbents are required to complete 105 hours of professional growth activities and renew the Associate Teacher Permit every five years. Fees related to obtaining and renewing the Associate Teacher Permit are at the employee's expense.
THE POSITION
Assists a teacher in a Child Development Center in conducting instructional activities, providing services to children newborn to fifth grade.
EDUCATION
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, and completion of a minimum of 12 semester units of coursework in early childhood education or child development (excluding field work), including at least one course of at least three semester units in each of the following core areas:
- Child/human growth and development
- Child, family, and community, or child and family relations
- Programs/curriculum
EXPERIENCE
Six months paid or unpaid experience working with and/or caring for children from newborn to fifth grade.
SPECIAL
- Incumbents must apply for an Associate Teacher Permit through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing within the first six months of employment.
- Successfully complete a pre‑employment physical examination. Absence of back problems or any other physical impairments that might preclude the performance of physical labor or lifting must be evident.
- Some positions in this classification require the ability to speak, read, and write a second language in addition to English.
KNOWLEDGE OF
- Personal hygiene.
- Symptoms of common childhood illnesses such as colds, flu, diarrhea, chicken pox.
- Basic food preparation.
- Simple record keeping.
- Basic housekeeping methods.
- Developmentally appropriate practices with children.
- Objective observations of children.
ABILITY TO
- Communicate orally and in writing for the purpose of providing and obtaining information.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Determine needs of newborn to fifth‑grade children.
- Perform physical labor, including lifting children to facilitate health or mobility needs.
- Organize and develop educational and recreational activities.
- Perform simple routine clerical duties.
- Attend first aid and CPR annual training.
