Substitute Teacher Opportunities

We are currently accepting applications from highly qualified and high-performing substitute teacher candidates for current and future opportunities during the school year.

  • Daily Substitute

:

Work at various schools across the district; pick-up daily or weekly assignments; flexible schedule

  • Building Substitute

:

Assigned to one specific school; regular daily schedule; build strong relationships with staff and students; opportunity for additional responsibilities; deeper school involvement

  • Long-Term Substitute

:

Fill specific classroom assignment for 35+ days; full teacher responsibilities (lessons, grading, meetings); rate increase to $287/day after working 35 consecutive school days

Position Summary

In the absence of the regular classroom teacher on a daily or long term basis, the substitute teacher is responsible for the continuation of all learning activities in the classroom. The substitute is expected to be knowledgeable about instruction and demonstrate facility in the basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics. Substitute teachers are expected to effectively communicate with students and establish a positive climate and maintain classroom discipline.

  • Demonstrate facility in the skills of reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Effectively implement instructional plans left by the classroom teacher or building administrators and use appropriate instructional techniques
  • Effectively communicate with students
  • Help students develop positive self-concepts
  • Establish a positive learning environment
  • Demonstrate effective classroom management techniques
  • Communicate with the teacher they have replaced and/or the building administrator to ensure a seamless flow of learning
  • Become familiar with fire drill procedures
  • Keep a dated list of pupil attendance
  • Follow classroom procedures as outlined by the classroom teacher

Qualifications

  • Conferred bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred
  • High School Diploma is acceptable
  • Effective organization skills with regard to the utilization of time, space, materials, and equipment for instruction
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in classroom management
  • Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with administrators, teachers and non-certified staff
  • Effective written and oral communication
  • Ability to be flexible in work assignments
  • Long-Term Substitutes are required to have a conferred bachelor’s degree, 12 credits in subject area, and Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) Form 175 submitted to the CSDE for approval by the district

Salary and Terms of Employment

The rate of pay for a daily substitute teacher with a HS diploma and less than a bachelor’s degree is $118 per day. The rate of pay for a substitute teacher with a bachelor’s degree is $162 per day. The rate of pay for a substitute teacher with a Connecticut teacher certification is $177 per day. The rate of pay for a long-term substitute teacher with a bachelor’s degree after 35 consecutive days in the same assignment is $287 per day.
