Position Summary:
The Senior Laboratory Engineer performs a diverse number of engineering tasks in support of Cadwell’s industry-leading neuro-diagnostics equipment. They drive the continuous maintenance and improvement of active and released products, support design engineering with research and development activities in the pursuit of new products, and oversee aspects of the transfer of new designs to manufacturing.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Sustains Released Hardware Designs: Performs continuous maintenance of Cadwell’s released medical devices; uses electrical and mechanical engineering skills to design improvements to products and release them to production under engineering change order
Root Cause Analysis: Analyzes nonconformed production floor material and field returns, conducting root-cause analysis to understand failure modes; possible design improvement opportunities; oversees and drives design changes to continuously improve the reliability and performance of Cadwell’s products
Component Engineering: Performs continuous monitoring of component library, addressing part obsolescence by identifying alternate parts and developing suitable test plans to qualify them; performs verification tests to ensure quality and performance standards and releases component updates as needed
Test Fixtures and Equipment: Develops equipment necessary to meet test requirements from design engineering; solicits opportunities from and collaborates with Service, Operations, and Supplier Quality Engineering departments to continuously improve test and manufacturing fixtures and processes for robustness and throughput
Design-for-X Review: Participates in and at times drives design reviews of both new product designs modifications to existing products; Provides feedback to design engineers to facilitate and encourage reliable, manufacturable product design practices
Design Verification Testing: Plans , performs, and documents verification testing of new and existing products to ensure design quality of Cadwell products
Material Inspection: Plans , performs, and documents material inspections on materials from Cadwell’s many sub-contractors and vendors; collaborates with supplier quality engineering on identified issues using knowledge of manufacturing processes and workmanship standards
Design Transfer to Production: Supports and leads portions of the translation of Cadwell’s design, assembly, and test requirements into the manufacturing environment for both new designs and modifications of launched designs; collaborates with design engineering and manufacturing engineering to ensure efficient and scalable production team handoff
Technical Collaboration: Collaborates as needed with other Cadwell engineers, production staff, and service personnel to share engineering insight into troubleshooting, analysis, and engineering best practices.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of schematics, datasheets, and troubleshooting down to the component level within printed circuit assemblies.
Thorough knowledge of troubleshooting in multi-component electro-mechanical assemblies; problem-solving in larger systems.
Thorough knowledge of common engineering design best practices.
Thorough knowledge of engineering change control processes fundamentals.
Working knowledge using Altium Designer or similar PCB design software including areas of both schematic capture and PCB layout.
Working knowledge of mechanical CAD tools, such as Solidworks, AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.
Working knowledge of the processes, standards, and equipment used in the manufacture of electronic products; understands basic limitations and best practices for both printed circuit assemblies and bare fabrications. Working knowledge of analog and digital electronics design fundamentals. Working knowledge of relevant medical device safety standards; able to perform electrical and mechanical safety tests as needed. Working knowledge of applicable EMC standards; able to participate in EMC tests with limited training and guidance.
Education / Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent worked experience.
Typically has greater than five (5) years of relevant professional or technical engineering experience with three (3) years or more experience in the electronics design or manufacturing fields.
Preferred experience working in a regulated environment, ideally in a medical or similar safety and/or reliability focused industry.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Positions working with Cadwell equipment generally may require some reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, standing, walking, sitting, hearing, visual acuity, color vision, and 2-way written/verbal communication.
