Job Summary

The Utility Construction Laborer performs a variety of physical tasks to support the installation, repair, and maintenance of underground utility systems, including water, sewer, storm drainage, and related infrastructure. This position works under the direction of foremen and equipment operators to safely complete construction projects while maintaining high standards of quality and productivity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation of water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and other underground utility systems.
  • Load, unload, and transport construction materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Excavate, clean, and prepare trenches using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Assist pipe layers with placing pipe, fittings, valves, hydrants, manholes, and related utility components.
  • Install bedding, backfill, and compact trenches according to project specifications.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, compactors, pumps, and other small equipment safely.
  • Assist in locating existing underground utilities and protecting them during excavation.
  • Perform grading, site cleanup, erosion control, and restoration work.
  • Set up and maintain traffic control devices and construction signage as required.
  • Follow all OSHA regulations, trench safety requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Maintain a clean and organized job site.
  • Assist with equipment maintenance, fueling, and daily inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous construction experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor environments.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds regularly.
  • Basic knowledge of construction tools and safe work practices.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in underground utility construction.
  • Trench Safety awareness.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Experience reading grade stakes and construction plans.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Walk, stand, kneel, crouch, bend, climb, and work in trenches throughout the workday.
  • Work outdoors in extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, and dusty conditions.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and travel to project locations as needed.

Work Environment

This position is performed primarily on active construction sites where employees are exposed to heavy equipment, excavation activities, moving traffic, uneven terrain, dust, noise, and varying weather conditions. Employees are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
