Applicant required to successfully complete testing to lift/carry 78 lbs, pull 125 lbs, lift 2-45 lbs weights up a ladder, kneeling work in confined spaces, and other tasks.
Purpose To perform skilled work in an electrical generation, mechanical and electrical utility, and chilling station environment.
Assists plant mechanics in the installation and repair of power plant and chilling station equipment. Maintains shop areas, work sites, equipment and tools in a safe and orderly fashion. Perform elevated work and operate cranes, personnel lifts, and forklifts.
Performs preventative and breakdown maintenance on welding shop equipment and tools, ensuring that they are accounted for, properly serviced, and are free from abuse and neglect.
Inspect, erect, utilize, and break down scaffolding in support of plant maintenance and operational duties. Clean up work areas and plant areas as required. Lays out, cuts, fits, and installs various metal types (ferrous and non-ferrous) and assembles structural, pressure containment and piping fitting. Assists plant mechanics in the installation and repair of power plant and chilling station equipment. Estimates material and labor requirements and orders or procures materials. Follows all safety guidelines pertaining to the equipment, vehicles.
Reads and understands engineering and fabrication drawings, welding procedures, and procedure qualification records. Installs and repairs piping and equipment in accordance with drawings, ASME, AWS, and other appropriate codes. Responsible for performing certified welding in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) pressure containment welding codes and the American Welding.
Attends staff, safety meetings, plant operation and maintenance training courses. Required to carry University cell phone during work and on-call hours. Follows all University and UEM safety policies and procedures, takes required safety training, identifies and reports safety hazards. Performs work tasks in a safe manner, wears the proper personal protective equipment.
High school graduation or GED.
Five years of related journey level experience in welding or completion of formal certification welding program.
Employment is contingent on demonstrating the ability to produce sound welds by passing welder performance qualification tests in accordance with the requirements of ASME pressure containment and AWS structural codes as specified by the hiring department.
Welders must also physically demonstrate that they have retained the skills necessary to continue with.
Experience in an industrial or university physical plant environment.
Experience with welding power piping and tubes in power boilers.
Experience with repairing rotating equipment.
Experience operating cranes, forklifts and personnel lifts.
Knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, occupational.
Driving Required This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
