Role Description The Lab Technician Intern role is an on-site internship located at Schneider’s Dairy in Pittsburgh, PA. The intern will assist with routine laboratory testing of dairy products, including sampling, recording results, and monitoring product quality to support food safety and compliance standards. Daily tasks may include operating basic lab equipment, preparing and labeling samples, maintaining accurate documentation, and following established protocols for microbiological and chemical testing. The intern will help keep the lab clean, organized, and stocked, and will collaborate with production and quality assurance teams to communicate findings. This role offers hands-on experience in a regulated food production environment and exposure to quality systems and industry certifications.

Qualifications

  • Foundational knowledge of laboratory practices, including safe handling of samples, basic microbiology or chemistry, and familiarity with common lab equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to follow written procedures, accurately record data, and maintain organized documentation.
  • Commitment to food safety and quality standards, with an interest in learning HACCP, SQF, and other regulatory or certification requirements.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate with lab, production, and quality assurance personnel.
  • Reliable work habits, including punctuality, adherence to safety protocols, and willingness to perform hands-on tasks in a production environment.
  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed coursework in food science, biology, chemistry, dairy science, or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights as needed for sample handling, and work in a refrigerated or production setting as required.
