Position: Chinese Brush Painting Instructor (Temporary, Part-Time Pool)

Chinese Brush Painting Instructor (Temporary, Part-Time Pool)

This part‑time position requires the ability to instruct classes in Chinese Brush Painting, introduce the students to various media and processes in the discipline, giving demonstrations as needed. Instruction also includes visually illustrated lectures covering historical and contemporary approaches in Chinese Brush Painting. Teaching assignments may be scheduled as day, evening, or weekend courses at the Ocean Campus: 50 Frida Kahlo Way, San Francisco.

Job Duties

  • Instruct students in person at various levels, from beginner to advanced, in freehand Chinese brush painting and formal styles of Chinese calligraphy, following the course curriculum.
  • Conduct appropriate lectures and demonstrations as needed to instruct various methodologies in Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy.
  • Assign students various learning activities in accordance with the current course outlines, generate relevant instructional materials and lectures to promote student achievement and evaluate student progress.
  • Perform duties associated with instructing and assessing student progress including, but not limited to census, grading, and student learning outcomes.
  • Maintain appropriate records in accordance with the needs of the Art Department and the expectations of the college in general.
  • Instruct students and demonstrate safe and proper use of materials and tools.
  • Abide by and enforce college identified safety and hazardous materials protocols.
  • Coordinate with area faculty in ordering teaching/classroom supplies.
  • Routinely communicate with area faculty for ongoing improvement of teaching approaches, resources, student assessments and related reports.
  • Teach in‑person day, evening and/or Saturday classes as required.
  • Support and engage in an innovative culture of culturally responsive, inclusive and anti‑racist practices as it relates to student success with an awareness of student equity gaps.
  • Participate in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti‑racism to center pedagogy.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds (Required).
  • Master’s in Fine Arts, Art, or Art History OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in humanities OR the equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications

  • One or more years of successful teaching experience in Chinese Brush Painting at the college level or in advanced high school courses or non‑credit courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with all materials and processes used in Chinese Brush Painting.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach students with various levels of experience in art.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach non‑art majors.
  • Demonstrated ability to retain students and promote student success.
  • Demonstrated skills to teach large classes via group methods.
  • Demonstration of commitment to current professional involvement in art.
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally in a team environment on departmental projects.
  • Demonstrated instructional experience at the university or college level using culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of inequities in higher education and a commitment to rectifying policies and processes that restrict access for historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students.
