Elementary Music Teacher

Starting Date: Aug 10, 2026

Location: Garton Elementary, Des Moines, Iowa

Department: Teaching and Learning

Reports To: Building Administrator(s)

Responsibilities

  • Deliver daily lessons aligned to state and district standards that meet students’ individual needs and ensure growth.
  • Create a culturally inclusive classroom that meets academic and social‑emotional needs.
  • Participate in building and district professional learning communities to plan instruction, analyze data, and create assessments.
  • Monitor student learning daily and use multiple data points to guide and individualize instruction.
  • Communicate regularly with families.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Demonstrate consistent progress on meeting the eight Iowa Teaching Standards.

Additional Essential Functions (for every DMPS position)

  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
  • Assist with other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Valid Iowa teaching license (K-12 Music).
  • Knowledge of subject, curriculum, and effective teaching methods.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communications.
  • Previous classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience in an urban school district.

Job Details

  • Position Type: Full‑time (7.75 hour day)
  • FLSA Status: Exempt
  • Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, sitting, bending/stooping, reaching/pushing/pulling, lifting/carrying
  • Working Conditions: Mostly indoors with some outdoor responsibilities during recess and arrival/dismissal
  • Salary: $50,000 to $80,000 Per Year
  • Benefits: All candidates offered a position will be required to successfully pass a criminal background check, child and adult abuse registry check, and may require fingerprinting, drug and alcohol testing, a physical capacity test, and/or a motor vehicle record check.
