Job Title: Trades Maintenance Specialist I – opens until filled.

Position Overview

The Trades Maintenance Specialist I leads, participates, or operates independently providing journey‑level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, troubleshooting, construction, fabrication, and preventive maintenance. This position is primarily responsible for carpentry‑related tasks, including commercial framing, installation and repair of doors and windows, insulation, and drywall.

Essential Functions

  • Skilled analysis, repair, and maintenance of equipment, systems, and vehicles.
  • Fabricate and modify equipment, systems, and facilities based on verbal instructions, sketches, or technical drawings.
  • Inspect, service, and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Conduct quality‑control analysis on equipment and systems, implementing corrective actions for optimal performance.
  • Inspect, approve, or certify the work of others when authorized.
  • Maintain detailed records of activity, operations, service, and usage for equipment, vehicles, and systems.
  • Prepare oral and written activity reports and estimates for complex operations, maintenance, and special projects.
  • Prepare sketches and drawings to communicate work plans to supervisors, subordinates, and contractors.
  • Coordinate activities with other units, agencies, or contractors to ensure efficient resource use and minimize disruptions.
  • Monitor contractor performance, including goods and services provided.
  • Conduct on-the-job training for employees in the assigned work‑unit.
  • Manage the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Maintain security and accountability for all tools, equipment, and materials, especially in sensitive environments.
  • Ensure the use of safety and personal protective equipment and implement work‑site traffic control procedures.
  • Oversee the maintenance and care of turf grasses, trees, and ornamental shrubs, including pest control, fertilization, and addressing plant health issues.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years journey‑level experience in cabinetry, carpentry, and structural steel or two years of experience with Pima County in a Trades Maintenance Apprentice or closely‑related position. Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted. Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the application.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum three (3) years of experience in commercial framing, drywall, doors, windows, and insulation. Experience with installation and repairs of millwork, countertops, hardware, and finish carpentry. Experience with reading and interpreting blueprint drawings. Experience with metal studs framing and fabrication of small‑scale projects such as awnings and shade structures.

Selection Procedure

Recruitment is based on meeting or exceeding the minimum qualifications, with further evaluation against preferred qualifications. The hiring authority may use additional assessments or testing.

Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: Valid State of Arizona driver’s license at time of application and at time of appointment. Valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) may be required. Driver record review of 39 months will be conducted. Applicants must be able to obtain any required certifications (e.g., herbicide/pesticide applicator, backflow device inspector) by appointment. Background checks and aviation or healthcare clearance where applicable.

Working Conditions

Capacity to lift and carry up to seventy‑five pounds; safe operation of assigned vehicles and powered equipment; tolerance of extremes of heat, humidity, dust, and cold; use of required safety clothing/equipment; ability to work near hazardous chemicals and in confined spaces; ability to ascend and descend ladders and stairs; color discrimination required.

Required Physical/Sensory Requirements

Post‑job‑offer physical examination is required.
