Duties

  • Safely operate Class A tractor-trailers across designated routes, ensuring compliance with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations.
  • Load and unload freight using manual handling techniques or equipment such as forklifts when necessary, ensuring cargo integrity and safety.
  • Drive a variety of truck configurations including flatbeds, refrigerated trailers, tankers, hazardous materials (dangerous goods), and specialized trucks like dump or roll-off vehicles.
  • Use GPS navigation systems to plan routes efficiently while adjusting for traffic, weather, or road conditions to meet delivery schedules.
  • Load and secure freight properly to prevent shifting or damage during transit; handle logistics cargo with precision and care.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance; document any issues or repairs needed.
  • Maintain accurate logs of driving hours, inspections, deliveries, and other required documentation in accordance with FMCSA regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch teams regarding delivery status, route changes, or safety concerns during trips.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
  • Proven experience in commercial truck driving, especially route driving over long distances.
  • Skilled in operating manual transmission trucks; experience with automatic transmissions is a plus.
  • Familiarity with refrigerated trailers, flatbeds, tankers, hazardous materials regulations, and dangerous goods handling.
  • Ability to perform manual handling tasks safely when loading/unloading freight; forklift certification is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations related to driver hours of service and vehicle safety standards.
  • Strong understanding of logistics cargo handling procedures for various freight types including freight that requires special equipment or handling protocols.
  • Excellent navigation skills using GPS systems; ability to adapt routes as needed for efficiency and safety.
  • Physical ability to handle the demands of long-haul driving including lifting heavy items when necessary.
