Position: POLICE OFFICER RECRUIT (Currently attending Academy)

Overview

Stockton Police Department offers excellent opportunities for individuals who are currently attending a full or part-time police academy. This entry‑level, non‑sworn training position learns general police work under close supervision, participates in a comprehensive training program, and may transition to a sworn Police Officer upon successful graduation.

Qualified Candidates Will

  • Currently attend a California P.O.S.T Basic Peace Officer Academy and provide a letter from their academy.
  • Provide a copy of their POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test with a T‑Score of 45.0 or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Perform law enforcement and crime prevention work.
  • Attend Academy and other related training.
  • Perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the department.
  • Provide information, directions, and assistance to the public; take reports and assist the public with complaints or unusual situations.
  • Control traffic flow and enforce state laws, local code violations, and traffic regulations.
  • Perform investigative work.
  • Participate in and assist special crime prevention and enforcement programs.
  • Manage traffic and accident situations, special events, or congested scenarios.

Education

Graduation from a U.S. high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate. Completion of some college coursework is preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Must attend a California P.O.S.T. certified peace officer academy.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid California class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
  • Must be at least 20 years old at application and 21 by appointment as a Police Officer.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, polygraph, psychological examination, and California Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
  • Must be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that could adversely affect exercise of peace officer duties.
  • Must pass a physical examination and drug screen; vision requirements: 20/100 uncorrected, 20/30 corrected; color blindness is disqualifying; hearing must be within normal range.
  • Must maintain POST physical standards, including the ability to lift, drag, or manipulate objects weighing at least 165 pounds.
  • Must be willing to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; tolerate hazardous materials and all weather conditions.
  • Must maintain primary residence within 45 minutes of City Hall; new employees have up to 3 months to comply.

Knowledge of

  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Techniques in dealing with people of all socioeconomic levels under hostile and emergency situations.

Skill in

  • Writing clearly, accurately, concisely, and legibly with correct grammar.
  • Observing, assimilating, remembering, and recalling pertinent facts and details.
  • Reading maps and mapped information.

Ability to

  • Acquire knowledge of police work, state laws, city ordinances, first aid, geography, and location of important buildings through training.
  • Read and interpret complex technical documents in English.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Plan and present material orally to diverse groups, and communicate effectively in written reports.
  • Apply laws, statutes, court decisions, policies, and investigative theories to decision making.
  • Analyze problems and take effective action in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Observe, recall, and judge situations accurately.
  • Achieve proficiency in self‑defense techniques and firearm use and care.
  • Show initiative, alertness, integrity, and reliability.
