Bus Driver Class 3 - Lead Driver

Operate a school bus in a safe and efficient manner to ensure the safety of passengers. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the Transportation Department.

Provide guidance and training to bus drivers and associates as directed. Operate the school bus in a safe, effective, and proficient manner. Perform visual bus safety inspection at the start of each route. Comply with all pre-trip and post-trip procedures and expectations. Report all vehicle damage and/or repair items using established procedures. Ensure interior and exterior cleanliness and appearance of the school bus. Maintain appropriate student behavior on the bus and report policy infractions as necessary. Assist in providing the necessary safeguards to prevent loss of or damage to property, or failure of mechanical equipment. Maintain a Motor Vehicle Record that meets District guidelines. Assist in the inspection, operation, and use of specialized equipment for students with additional accommodations, including wheelchairs, safety vests, etc. Complete Medicare. Utilize a computer for District and Department email communications and online training. Attend professional development. Adhere to District policies and Department work expectations.

Additional Essential Functions (for every DMPS position):

Attend work on a prompt and regular basis. Maintain confidentiality. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.

Hiring Specifications:

Twenty (20) years of age or older. Ability to obtain Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) prior to hire. Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within a 60-day period from date of hire. Working knowledge of city and school locations. Ability to use computer to take required online training. Effective communication skills. For internal candidates, meets or better rating on employee evaluation criteria established by the district, 10 or fewer days of absence during the past 12 months, zero (0) incidents involving formal discipline on file, and meets all other stated requirements of the job posting.
