Job Description

Title: FOREMAN - Journeyman Carpenter; Maintenance

Job Goal

Under general supervision, performs the full range of journeyman level carpenter duties in the construction, finishing and repair of buildings, furniture and other wood or metal products in order to support the education mission of the District and to enhance the education environment; and, provides direction and guidance to others to ensure the efficient operation of the carpenter department.

Essential Functions

  • The foreman will perform all listed functions, and will assist the Director of Physical Properties maintain cohesive and efficient operation of the maintenance department through the successful completion of additional tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Assist the Director with project specifications
  • Assist the Director by providing professional input and guidance.
  • Gather cost estimates for repairs or equipment replacement for action by the Director
  • Prepare quote sheets for approval
  • Coordinate with other crafts and outside vendors when necessary, or at the request of the Director
  • Plan and coordinate the daily work within this specific trade or craft to complete work order requests in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all completed work order information is entered appropriately
  • Provide the first level of leadership guidance of others within this specific trade or craft
  • Complete the first level of performance evaluation for others within this specific trade or craft, for approval by the Director
  • Inform the Director of potential personnel issues and/or violations of adopted Personnel Policies, and participating in appropriate corrective action.
  • All other actions as directed by the Director to ensure that District goals and policies are met in a safe and timely manner
  • Performs rough and finished carpentry work in the repair and construction of buildings, sheds, roofs, room partitions and other items.
  • Estimates, determines needs, and arranges for supplies and equipment in order to perform or schedule work assignments.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and/or specifications to determine procedure(s) for required construction and/or remodel projects.
  • Repairs partitions, doors, locks, windows, blinds, floors, furniture, screens, shades, upholstery, stage curtains, auditorium seating and building framework.
  • Installs finished hardware such as, but not limited to window or door locks, hinges, screens, or other related work.
  • Installs floor boards and floor coverings such as linoleum tile, VCT, carpet tiles or other sheet goods.
  • May make minor roof repairs in association with District’s roofer or as needed.
  • Hang various items in a safe and secure manner, which may include plaques, pictures/frames, banners, inspection certificates (i.e. pool, elevator, boilers, health department.)
  • Constructs minor buildings or small additions relating to existing structures.
  • Will assist other departments as needed to ensure all carpentry related work is performed according to safety standards.
  • Uses and performs operator maintenance on tools and equipment common to the trade, such as but not limited to planers, joiners, sanders, saws and drills.
  • Keeps accurate record of time and materials used to successfully complete job tasks using written and/or computer-generated formats.
  • May perform minor supervisory jobs as needed.
  • May be required to perform other duties as required at a level of skill the same as or lower than required by his/her normal work assignment.
  • Must be able to perform work that involves the possible disturbance of asbestos containing materials (ACMs).
  • Must be medically and physically able to wear a respirator.
  • Other duties as directed.
