Location: 37822 Carolinas Medical Center - Pre Transplant Center
Position Type: Full Time
Hours: 40 per week
Schedule Flexibility: May include evenings, nights, weekends. On-call availability required.
Responsibilities
- Assist surgeons in procedures: incise tissue, retract for field exposure, maintain dry field, clamp/cauterize/ligate bleeders, identify anatomical structures, use instruments appropriately, perform or assist with wound closure, sutures, staples, and dressings. Provide sterile field preparation and maintenance using aseptic techniques.
- Perform scrub role duties: prepare sterile field timely, drape incision sites, comply with departmental policies on specimens, counts, instrument disposition, maintain sterile boundaries, act as preceptor, maintain safe environment, assist in emergencies, maintain records and competencies.
- Prepare surgical instruments and supplies: open sterile packs, use supplies efficiently to reduce waste, assist patient skin prep (shave, scrub, painter), verify instruments per physician preference card and scrub tips, position patient per circulating nurse, complete cleanup and turnover after case.
- Collaborate with healthcare team: support goals of Surgical Services, share clinical knowledge, demonstrate self‑direction, accept team responsibilities.
- Maintain professional growth: uphold skills, complete assignments/projects, participate in committees, maintain certification.
- Ensure compliance: maintain patient confidentiality, use guest‑relation techniques with team and patients.
- Assist in robotic surgery as required.
Qualifications
- Education: Graduation from an accredited surgical assistance program. Must complete continuing education annually to maintain competence and credentials.
- Certification / Licensure: Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential; Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider; Current CST Certification.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Good communication skills; ability to independently perform scrub duties; current professional state licensure under IDFPR.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- May be exposed to body fluids, waste and chemicals, anesthesia gases, hazardous materials, radiation, and life‑threatening diseases.
- Must recognize needs of patients across age groups and have prior experience with various age groups (preferred).
- Ability to stand for long periods; lift 50 pounds; lift up to 35 pounds without assistance for patient lifts if required; use patient‑handling equipment when necessary; manage stress and changing environment; respond quickly to emergencies and fire/code situations; work designated shifts including weekends, holidays, and on‑call duties.
