Salary and Benefits:
The salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Officers varies as follows:
Base Salary: GL-9/GS-11, $63,148 - $120,145 per year
Locality Pay: Variable by duty location.
Overtime Pay: Up to 25%
Your duty location can significantly affect your pay rate; locality pay for federal law enforcement can be higher in certain areas. A fully trained Border Patrol Officer may be eligible for an additional 25% of base pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This career ladder position offers progression from GL-9 to GS-11 and up to GS-12. You'll be eligible for promotion to the next grade level after successfully completing 52 weeks in your current position.
All Border Patrol Officers can choose from a comprehensive array of federal benefits including health and insurance plans, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (similar to a 401(k)).
Recruitment Incentives: Newly appointed Border Patrol Officers will be eligible for recruitment incentives of up to $20,000. The first $10,000 will be received upon successfully completing the Border Patrol Academy, with the remaining $10,000 awarded for acceptance at prioritized locations.
Retention Incentive: New Border Patrol Officers may also qualify for retention incentives of up to $40,000 over their first four years of service.
Duties Include:
- Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws.
- Preventing and apprehending individuals illegally crossing the border or engaged in smuggling activities.
- Conducting surveillance and monitoring physical evidence related to illegal entries.
- Performing checks and patrols in various settings including farms, buildings, and transportation hubs.
- Utilizing government vehicles, horses, and other assets for border patrol operations.
Qualifications:
To qualify for the GL-9 grade level, you need one year of specialized experience in law enforcement duties such as:
- Conducting physical searches for weapons and contraband.
- Assisting in the apprehension of violators of immigration and criminal laws.
- Proficiently using firearms and preparing investigative reports.
If you possess law enforcement or military experience, you may qualify for the GS-11 grade level, which includes duties such as:
- Tracking illegal operations and criminal activities using intelligence information.
- Leading investigations into illegal activities and threats.
- Apprehending violators using advanced surveillance and detection technology.
To apply, you must be a U.S. Citizen, have primary residency in the U.S. for at least three of the last five years, and be referred for selection before reaching your 40th birthday, unless you have prior federal law enforcement experience. Veterans’ Preference may exempt you from age restrictions.
Upon hiring, candidates will undergo approximately six months of intensive training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, covering all aspects of law enforcement in relation to immigration and nationality laws.
