Overview

We are seeking a versatile Civil Designer / Landscape Designer to join our collaborative land development team. This is a great opportunity for a designer who enjoys the technical precision of civil engineering and the creativity of landscape architecture. The role involves working across a diverse portfolio of residential, commercial, institutional, and mixed‑use developments

, contributing to both functional infrastructure design and the aesthetic integration of each site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support engineers and landscape architects in the preparation of site development plans

, grading layouts, utility plans, and stormwater design.

  • Assist with conceptual site planning

, layout design

, and landscape/planting plans that align with project goals and regulatory standards.

  • Perform drainage, grading, and utility calculations

, including stormwater management, erosion control, and hydrology studies.

  • Prepare and coordinate construction documents

—including improvement plans, general notes, details, and specifications.

  • Develop landscape plans with emphasis on sustainable and context‑appropriate materials, native plantings, and low‑impact design strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, surveyors, and planners to ensure cohesive and technically sound site designs.
  • Review and refine grading and drainage designs to integrate seamlessly with planting and hardscape features.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and material lists for both civil and landscape elements.
  • Attend client meetings, agency reviews, and design presentations; respond to comments and provide revisions as needed.
  • Participate in site visits for data collection, construction observation, and ensuring design intent is maintained.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of zoning codes, municipal requirements, and permitting processes related to site design and landscape improvements.

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or related field.
  • Minimum 3–6 years of experience in civil site design

  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D

; experience with Adobe Creative Suite

, Sketch Up

, or Lumion is a plus.

  • Understanding of grading design, stormwater systems, and utility coordination

, with an eye for visual design and site aesthetics.

  • Strong technical and graphic communication skills

—able to clearly present both engineered solutions and creative concepts.

  • Ability to interpret and produce construction documents, profiles, and plan sets efficiently and accurately.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills; ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity with MUTCD, VDOT standards, and municipal codes preferred.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience in residential and commercial land development projects within the Mid‑Atlantic region.
  • Knowledge of sustainable site practices

  • Interest in both the technical and creative aspects of site design and planning.
