About the Role
Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust, Inc. (WHLR) is looking for a detail-driven Financial Reporting Analyst to join our Accounting & Finance team at our Virginia Beach headquarters. This onsite role is a great opportunity for someone with public accounting or public-company experience who wants exposure to the full SEC reporting cycle, REIT-specific tax compliance, and property-level accounting — all in one seat.
You'll work closely with our SEC reporting, accounting, and audit teams on the filings and financial disclosures that keep a publicly traded REIT running, while building skills in REIT tax testing, financial statement consolidation, and internal controls.
What You'll Do
📊 Assist with SEC filings — 10-Ks, 10-Qs, 8-Ks, S-11s, S-3s, and other filings as needed
🏢 Prepare standalone financial statements for select properties
🔍 Support external auditors during quarterly reviews and annual audits
🏛️ Assist with REIT tax testing, including property acquisition (3-14) audits
📈 Support month-end journal entries and reconciliation processes
🧮 Complete corporate consolidation and variance analyses
📋 Maintain the new leases tracker for internal reporting
✅ Document and monitor internal controls alongside the audit team
🤝 Partner across Accounting, Finance, and other departments on more complex projects
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field
- 2–5 years' experience in regional or top-tier public accounting, and/or a public company environment
- Advanced Excel and Word skills
- Familiarity with MRI (or similar real estate accounting software), Workiva, and AI tools such as Claude or Microsoft Copilot
- A researcher's mindset — comfortable digging into technical accounting questions and reaching well-supported conclusions
- Strong organizational and communication skills; able to manage multiple deadlines and collaborate across teams
- Comfortable working independently, with good judgment about when to escalate
