The New York Times Opinion desk is looking for a digital designer to join our award-winning design team. You will design and art direct compelling mobile-first visual storytelling products and experiences, prioritizing UX performance and applying experimentation with the newest technology. You will work collaboratively with other creative, technical and editorial teams, responsible for coordinating multiple assets and contributors and meeting deadlines that follow audience plans and deadlines.
You have a portfolio demonstrating talent in aesthetics, typography, layout, motion, storytelling techniques, and user-centered design principles. You have an affinity for institutional brand consistency and an eye for subtle detail. You quickly distill complex ideas into clean, organized, understandable and impactful digital experiences.
This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities :
Work with editors, art directors, video, and photo to conceptualize and shape design ideas into immersive small, medium and large-scale digital storytelling experiences
Respond to projects with strategic and creative design solutions through interactive storytelling and wireframes
Iterate, synthesize and present multiple format options and explorations for stakeholder review
Develop template designs for recurring editorial features
Work with developers to ensure responsive and performant design quality across the full range of digital devices and browsers
Translate art and design into a versatile suite of assets for use across a range of promotion platforms, with an eye towards holistic cohesion
Incorporate feedback from multiple stakeholders through iterative processes, communicating ideas clearly and effectively
Develop, nurture and collaborate with a roster of artists (illustration, motion, and more) from sketch to final art phases
Contribute to the presentation of our journalism, and engage with others to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about our work
Maintain high journalistic standards for multimedia journalism
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
You will report to Deputy Editor Design
Basic Qualifications :
5+ years of digital design experience
Visual and interactive design skills — a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion, and behavior
Experience with iterative wireframing in Figma and implementing pixel-perfect digital design systems across multiple platforms
Preferred Qualifications :
Strong editorial judgment and experience proven ability to innovate and translate editorial priorities into multimedia storytelling
Experience with basic HTML/CSS and JavaScript.
Openness to developing technical fluency further to finesse design details with front-end developers
Experience working with video, audio, and data visualization
Experience working and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced news environment with a willingness to work a flexible, news-driven schedule that may occasionally include nights or weekends

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$113,945.85 $136,000 USD
For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
